Dead Show/podcast for 12/25/14

Merry Christmas!

yes the Deadpod is coming to you a day early in the spirit of the season.. Hoping that this finds you and yours healthy and happy today and sharing some acoustic Jerry to make your day, and weekend a little brighter. This is a BIG package under your tree (or in your ipod :) as I decided one show was just not enough to thank you all for another great year here on this bright blue ball.. First off, one of the great Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band shows from the legendary run at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York City, October 21st 1987. This is the early show - amazing energy and performance from these guys. The lineup featured David Kemper on drums, John Kahn of course on bass, Sandy Rothman on mandolin, dobro, banjo and vocals and the great David Nelson on guitar and vocals.

Dead Show/podcast for 12/19/14

This week's Deadpod features some ferocious Garcia jamming, and again, while the tape is not perfect, for fans like us, this is well worth listening to and experiencing. Of course this week is the remainder of the show from 12/10/72 at Winterland in San Francisco CA. This show features a spectacular 'Other One'.. the band drifts into this following some very interesting jamming out of Truckin'. Sit back and experience where this jam takes you, I think you'll be quite surprised at the varied landscapes here. They follow this spectacular jam with a nice Deal and a very good Sugar Magnolia. Ramble on Rose has a rather different but pleasing location in the setlist, followed by Johnny B Goode to close the set and put a mark on what the boys knew to be a great performance. The boys return with a sweet and well done 'Uncle John's Band' as an encore. What a nice way to end the show..

Dead Show/podcast for 12/12/14

While this week's Deadpod features a tape that is not complete, and has some cuts, I still believe it is strong enough to feature for this week and next. This show comes to us from Winterland Arena, where the band performed after a short break from touring on December 12, 1972. Unfortunately most of the first set is missing. What we have starts with a great 'Bertha', following that is Garcia at full force during an incendiary 'Playin' In the Band'. This beauty goes on for about 20 minutes of first class Jerry virtuosity. I love this version. While this tape is not the highest quality recording, its worth listening to just for this performance. The band moves into a much more standard Casey Jones to close the first set.
We'll listen to the first part of the second set as well, which opens with a rockin' Promised Land followed by a nice Stella Blue. The China Cat->I Know You Rider opens up very nicely, especially in the transition jam, and leaves us wanting more, which we'll hear next week.

Dead Show/podcast for 12/5/14

There is no way I wouldn't come back to this show this week and present this wonderful second set. Of course this is from December 12th, 1990 at McNichols Arena in Denver Colorado. While it takes a few verses for the boys to catch on fire, once they do they roll on through a 2 hour set full of passion and energy that makes this one of the best shows of a very good year.  They start with a nice China ->Rider that rolls into a really pretty Looks Like Rain.. Hornsby adds some wonderful touches here. Somewhat surprisingly, Iko follows, but that perhaps is not as surprising as the Dark Star that crashes from it. This one is pretty well formed, and a real treat to listen to throughout. The band rolls into a nice Terrapin Station following, and gives its audience a bit of a break as it winds into drums and space. Jerry, Bob and Phil give the Watchtower that follows its dark streak then Garcia provides a wonderful Stella Blue. I won't attempt to describe it.. just listen.
They come out with an excellent Throwing Stones->Not Fade Away to close the set. The Weight that follows has long been one of my favorite encores when done well, and this was I think was.

I hope you enjoy this week's Deadpod.
