Sometimes we all need to be flexible, right? Well this week I hope you'll forgive a change of plans. I'm going to push back the second set of 3/11/93 for a week to bring you a show that was played 26 years ago on November 5th, 1985 at The Centrum in Worcester, MA. The entire first week of November 85 was marked by a number of wonderful shows and this one is no exception. I decided to bring you the *entire* show this week -in honor of the birthday of a friend of the Deadpod and because I hadn't done that in awhile.. This show has a wicked Shakedown Street, as well as a fabulous closing from Black Peter right through Brokedown Palace. I hope you enjoy it.. and happy birthday David...

I've had a fair number of requests for 90's Dead shows recently, and this week's shows features one of the best shows that took place back in 1993. This one is a favorite not only because the second set features an appearance by Ken Nordine, but also because I really enjoy Jerry's playing and the rest of the band puts in a solid performance. This starts with a tight Help->Slip into a nice long Franklin's Tower. Althea is always a favorite, and the Masterpiece as well as So Many Roads is quite enjoyable.

This week's Deadpod came as the result of two requests I received this week - its not unusual to get requests but it is to get two requests for the same show, both from brothers in Europe! Its a fine show, and even though I'd played a show from this year recently I think its worth hearing this one. Besides, something in the ether is wanting me to play this so here it is :) This comes to us from Wembley Arena in London England, from October 30th, 1990. This week's Deadpod takes us back to some early "primal" Dead, back to the Winterland Arena in the fall of 1967. While we don't have all of this show, I think you'll enjoy how tight and well played these songs are. The band is clearly listening to each other and hitting on all cylinders. Pay attention to the lyrics used here on "The Other One".
This show's a blast.. afterwards, I've included a cut from the Europe 72 vol 2 CD, the fabulous "Sing Me Back Home" from the last show of the tour.. This second set starts out with a tight and wonderful Eyes->Estimated->Foolish Heart. We then go into quite a nice drums->space, which takes us to a nice quiet place ripped open by Phil as the band turns into the Other One.. The Wheel and Sugar Magnolia end the set. Jerry's Knockin' on Heaven's Door ends the show as everyone thoughts turned to Brent..

Well Fall has officially arrived, and this season inevitably brings to my mind the fond memories of one of the greatest later-era Grateful Dead runs - Madison Square Garden in the Fall of 1990. When the band arrived in New York the jury was still out on their future following the passing of Brent Mydland. By the time they left after these shows, they had a new member, and any questions were answered as to their desire and capability to keep producing great music.
The show I'm featuring the next two weeks, from September 18th, 1990 is not the most famous of the run, but it is a very fine and enjoyable show. In this first set I have to point out the magnificant 'To Lay Me Down->Promised Land' closer...

This week on the Deadpod I decided to feature a show from the fall of '77.. probably not the time of that year that usually comes to mind but this show, in my opinion, deserves some recognition.. this was performed on September 29th in
Seattle WA. Not only does this show exhibit its wonderful '77 pedigree, but the last three songs really ... rock.. out. In a sense this is a show that looks forward as well as back.. and showcases where the band is going and where it has been.. I find it quite enjoyable.. (be forwarned there is some music that has been lost here.. Mississippi Half Step and Deal both cut in.. ).. but the Franklins!!

This week we have a fine second set from July 29th, 1988 to entertain us as we reflect on how fortunate we were to have Jerry Garcia share his talents with us. This is a great example of a late 80s second set, with an unusual China Cat->Crazy Fingers->I Know You Rider to open the set. This is followed by a Playin' in the Band which really gets out there - Barlow remarked that this one would separate the true believers from those who weren't:)
I also just love the rare but wonderful 'Believe It Or Not' a song that fits the ballad position perfect and was all too rare..
I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do, and while its been 16 years since we lost Jerry what he left us to enjoy is such a treasure that I can only rejoice in his life.. thanks for sharing the ride.

Here's a show that caught my eye this week from the Wall of Sound era - this one is from May 14th, 1974 in Missoula Mountana.. this is probably not the finest show of the era, but nevertheless there is plenty here to like. In this first set, the band really gets cranking on the Scarlet->Roses.. what a delicious segway.. The Tennessee Jed and Mexicalli Blues are equally inspring, and all in all this is a fine first set of classic Grateful Dead. Set 2 will follow next friday..

This week the music world lost a true star - Clarence 'Big Man' Clemons.. Aside from his pivotal role in the E. Street Band Clarence was a friend of the Grateful Dead and played with Jerry Garcia as well. In honor of his passing, a listener of the Deadpod requested this show, and it is absolutely perfect to play this week. This was the longest segment Clarence played with the Grateful Dead and occurred on Dec. 6th, 1989 at the Earthquake Benefit that took place at the Oakland Coliseum. (This also happened to be the date of the 20th anniversary of the Altamont). I thought I would bring you the second set because that's where Clarence sat in with the band on the majority of the set .. I could be persuaded to play the first set next week.. I think you'll find this a great set.. I'm personally very fond of the Standing on the Moon, but I think Clarence adds some great licks on the Ship of Fools as well...

The highlight of this set however is the Stella Blue - Jerry is so expressive on this one - it bring shivers to me when I listen..

This week's show is the result of one of those wierd acts of synchronicity that led me to believe that it was meant to be... I had been thinking that it was about time to feature a show from 1985. I was thinking of which show to play and had seriously considered the show from Hershey PA on 6/28/85.. While this is a fun show, it has some problems - the weather was bad, the playing a bit sloppy even for 85 standards.. As I had pretty much concluded I wouldn't play this show I got a great email from a listener to the Deadpod who asked about the show that I am playing this week, from Merriweather Post Pavilion on 7/1/85. He told me about how much fun this show was and how he'd never really heard a great tape of it. While the tape I am playing tonight does suffer from a few anomalies, over all its a pretty good tape, and it captures a great time in GD history. This was the last time the band was able to play at this venue - the pressures and increasing popularity made it impossible. I think you'll enjoy this performance. The Dancin' opener is real fun, and the Dupree's is a highlight. Bobby does a fine job on the Let It Grow and admit it, its fun to hear Day Job once in awhile :)
Next week we'll listen to the monster second set, but I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do..

Ah how I love the month of May! Spring has come late this year, but I still find this month to be the most delightful... and I can never help but feature one of the Grateful Dead's classic performances from this month back in 1977. Clearly one of the greatest periods in their live performance history, while this month is well-known and well-liked I still can't resist pulling out one of these classic shows to feature this week. I can't begin to say what particular performance was the best during this exceptional period, but the show I've chosen this time is no slouch. This week we'll listen to set 1 - which in my mind features one of the all time best Peggy O's you'll hear, as well as a tremendous performance by Garcia on the set closing, Music Never Stopped.. It needs no more superlatives the music will speak for itself, let it lighten your heart like the song of a spring bird...

Frankly I equivocated a bit on this week's show.. the show itself was a wonderful request from one of our listener's for a show from a period in the band's history that was frankly uneven, at the end of the Keith and Donna era.. Not only would I call the period itself uneven, but this show as well, with the first set clearly not matching the luminescence of the second set. Be that as it may be, I decided to include the first set this week, partly due to the fact that I am a GD 'completest' as it were, and because its still some damm nice music. While it may be true that the band really revs it up in set 2, I think its worth hearing the entire show, and for support of that argument I point to the Jack Straw and Deal that we can enjoy in this week's first set.. I realize that I've been playing alot of early 70s Dead the last month or so and I plan on changing that up next week, but I just couldn't let that 1st set I played last week from 12/31/72 be orphaned - so I'm putting out the second set this week. Its distinguished not only for the fine ensemble playing characteristic of the time but by the presence of David Crosby on the 'Other One' and 'Morning Dew' - I think you'll be able to hear his playing..

I hope you enjoy this and forgive me for perhaps over-mining this period of GD history - there's of course a ton of other interesting periods to explore and we'll move to another next week...

It's not every year that NYE falls on a Friday, so I decided I should take advantage of the occasion to play a NYE show. The Dead were of course famous for their NYE concerts and the radio broadcasts of same that often provided many of us with a joyful experience of the boys we perhaps didn't get to see as often as we would like. I recall several New Years evenings at the radio station listening to the simulcast.. ahhhhh .. I can't claim that I heard this one, but as it marks the transition from one great GD year to another, I decided it would definitely be worth playing.. I really love the energy coming out of the New Year countdown into Around and Around.. the Jack Straw is awesome and I think in general the band is in fine form...

I suppose some might think I'm going a little far of field with this week's Deadpod but when I have the chance to play some rare jammin' Jerry I just can't resist. This show is from an early effort where Jerry joined Howard Wales (with whom Jerry was to release the 'Hooteroll' album) for a series of 14 shows from May of 1970 until this show which was Jerry's last with this lineup..
It is a jammed out jazzy performance of some really nice improvisational music. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I was only going to play the first set, but then thought better of it and decided to bring you the entire show.. I do hope you enjoy it as much as I do..

The rest of the set isn't too shabby either - I always enjoy a good 'Eyes of the World' and this one is no exception, but the band only played 'If I Had The World to Give' four times.. and this one is fabulous..

This week's Deadpod was a request from a brother who just lost a brother - one of his best memories of his late friend was a roadtrip to see this show, and what a show it was! This was the 'comeback' show where Jerry made his return after the coma that nearly took his life in 1986 - no one knew what was going to happen, and what a great choice for a opener in Touch of Grey! The entire show really sparkles, with a newfound energy and some great new MIDI sounds. To me, the energy of renewal present in this show fits perfectly at this time of year, besides I couldn't turn down a grieving friend.. I hope you enjoy it....
