Deadshow/podcast for 5/25/12

I know my prejudices are fairly obvious - do I love 1977 Dead shows? Guilty.. I can't seem to go through the month of May without featuring one of these gems and I decided I didn't want to spoil that record this year.. thus this week's show. This is a gem, pure and simple. Beautiful recording, beautiful playing. Check out Jerry on Sugaree, and Donna on Sunrise. Passenger, one of my favorites of this era is a swirling whirlwind of color and sound.. Jack-A-Roe is pretty.. enjoy this.. have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and I hope this music helps lubricate it all..

This week we get to listen to set 2 of the Dead's show in the Vegas desert from May 16th, 1993. All in all, a pretty darn good set, the Help->Slip->Frank features some nice improvisations by Vince. I'm a fan of Terrapin and this one does not disappoint, Jerry is in it.. The Other One and Wharf Rat are first rate, and the Throwin Stones goes into a Lovelight instead of the increasingly usual Not Fade Away.. Brokedown is always a nice way to leave a show..

This week's show, a listener request, was probably the best of the three day run in Vegas during May of '93. Garcia is fully involved and his work during Althea steps up this first set to be top rate. I really enjoy the reggae-like work on Row Jimmy as well. Cassidy is very well done and closes the set. Regrettably its a very short first set so I included the opening Samson from set 2 in this week's show. I'll play the rest of set 2, in pure soundboard form, next week. This week's first set comes from the last of Dan Healy's 'FM Master' feeds...

This week - the 2nd set of this incredible show from 1974 - 5/19/74 from Portland Oregon.  There are so many highlights here its impossible to list them all, The Greatest Story is one of the all-time bests, ditto for the Weather Report into a wondefully Garica-jammed Wharf Rat.  The Peggy-O is beautiful.. but the Phil-led Truckin' through Goin' Down the Road Feelin'Bad is simply magnificent. I love love love the mind left body jam..  This is definitely a time-machine kind of show (meaning I wish I could go back and see it! )Hope you enjoy it just as much as I do.

Dead Show/podcast for 4/27/12

This week's Deadpod came about, as they often do, due to several synchronistic events, a listener request, the immanent release of Dave's Picks Vol 2, and of course my own partiality for shows of this era. This week's show comes from the City of Roses, Portland Oregon and took place on May 19th, 1974. One of the early wall of sound shows, I think this is a wonderful representation of the band at this time of their history. This first set features some great Garcia riffs on these first set classic songs, as well as a very rare 'Money Money' (one of only three times they played the tune.) The highlight for me of this set comes with the closing China->Rider. Listen to Kreutzmann's drumming especially on this transition.. its really wonderful.

Dead Show/podcast for 4/20/12

This week I reached back to find a show befitting the 4/20 occasion and decided that despite its flaws only April 20th, 1969 would do. This one has been on the request list for some time, but it is a gas. This is of course a great example of 'good ol' Grateful Dead' with Pigpen featured prominently on Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and Lovelight, but it also includes a mind-bending Dark Star, a wonderful St. Stephen and a pair of wonderful encores - Dupree's Diamond Blues and Mountains of the Moon... not to mention the always powerful 'Death Don't Have No Mercy'..

Granted the recording suffers from some hiss in spots and doesn't have quite the headroom I would like, but if you let yourself explore where this wild band of outlaws takes you on this evening 43 years ago I'm sure you'll smile.............

While the reports I've read on this show indicate that it was not nearly full, the band puts out a top-notch effort and delivers a fun and well-played second set. Highlights for me include the outstanding Stella Blue (this is the version included on 'So Many Roads', the 'Staying Alive' jam out of drums, the Playin' in the Band (and the reprise) and of course, Werewolves of London.. As I listened again to last week's 'pod I decided that it was time to change things up for this week - (frankly I was less happy with the audio quality on that show than I wanted to be) so I'm bringing you a show with a nod to the University of Kentucky -this year's Men's NCAA Basketball Champions. This show took place back in the spring of 1978 - on April 21st, 1978. I think its strong throughout - aside from the loss of a bit of Dire Wolf - and of excellent sonic quality. Jerry is on his game this night and I am sure that this set will put a smile on your face.

There were quite a few outstanding shows that took place in early Spring throughout the history of the GD, so picking one for this week's show wasn't that easy. I think this is however a good show from an outstanding tour, Spring of 1987. The band roars out of the gate on Jack Straw, then goes into an outstanding Franklin's Tower, in honor of Philadelphia I presume.. The first set is full of sparkling playing and high energy. I'm personally fond of the Candyman, however, in the more soulful vein..
I'm even willing to give them a pass on the perfunctory 'Don't Ease' which closes the set... the second set next week is very good as well.. The sound quality is not pristine but quite listenable, I think. I hope you enjoy it, and that your Spring is busting out all over too.

I really love JGB from this mid-70s time. I can just put this on and feel my troubles float away - I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

This week's Deadpod features the second set from March 16th, 1990 at the Capital Center in Landover Maryland. The set starts with an unusual Scarlet->Estimated combination, which then leads into Ship of Fools.. The Man Smart, Woman Smarter that follows has a unique sound as does the sweet jam leading into Space.. I'm not as big a fan of the intro into 'The Other One' this time.. Some folks dislike the Stella Blue that follows - its just too slow for some peoples' tastes. I'll let you judge that for yourself. I think this is a fine show that is representative of a fine period of the GD history. I hope you enjoy it as well..

Well I can hope right? I thought for this March Deadpod that I'd bring you a show from the Spring of 1990, this one occurred the day following the show released as "Terrapin Station' .. on March 16th, 1990. I think this is quite an interesting show as well and well worth a listen. Of particular interest in this first set is the first performance of 'Black Throated Wind' since October 19th, 1974.. with some alternate lyrics to boot.. (I've posted these alternative lyrics below)..
I think the band was on a roll during this tour and personally I enjoy their sound.. I hope you do as well!

OK, I'm a few days late: ) still the Mardi Gras run is a great occasion to commemorate and the Dead did it up right many years - this one I think was one of those.. this week we have the second set from February 11th, 1986 with the Neville Brothers. It starts with a nice jamming drums into a groovy Iko.. the Eyes that follows won't make anyone's top 10 list, but the drums and space are jamming! For me the jamming is the highlight of this set, along with Jerry's rockin' out on the encore as he goes into 'Hey Bo Diddley!'... classic..

Hard to believe but it almost LENT already! And that of course means its Mardi Gras time! This next show up on our plate is from Mardi Gras 1986 - a request from a great friend of the Deadpod - from February 11th, 1986. This is one of those great Oakland Mardi Gras runs where the Neville Brothers opened for the boys (and we'll hear them on the second set next week). This week's first set, although ragged at times, and with Jerry's voice not exactly perfect, is still marked by alot of enthusiasm and good vibes. My favorites from this first set include a raging Minglewood, and a nice set closing Bird Song->Music Never Stopped->Might As Well..

This week's Deadpod comes from another great request - this for a show that while widely traded back in the day, often had less than stellar sound. I think this copy is quite good however and am happy to be able to share with you this fantastic show from 1976. Both sets are very well played, and I enjoy the sound of Phil throughout.. Jerry's vocals are also spot on, especially in the second set as you'll see next week. Originally broadcast on KSAN, but this remix really moderates most of the disagreeable aspects of earlier versions.

I've had the jones for some early mindbending Dead for awhile.. I finally decided this week was as good a time as any to feed it.. This week's Deadpod features fragments from two shows that took place 43 years ago, February 2nd and 3rd at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland OR. It's great to hear Tom Constanten on these tapes, I especially enjoy him on the Clementine from the 2nd.. that show on the 2nd also features the last time Bobby used these early lyrics:
"When I woke up this morning, my head was not in sight I would ask the walls about it, but they vanished overnight I could not think or spell my name, or fly there was no way and the heat came round and busted me for smiling on a cloudy day"
The 2/3 show was supposedly one of the shows used in producing 'Anthem of the Sun'.. This features a rare 'Born Cross Eyed' and a great 'Eleven'..

This week's Deadpod is like a Christmas present that you forgot about and didn't pay proper attention to for a time and rediscover it joyfully and realize it was a true treasure.. This tape was put out right around Christmas by Jamie Waddell over at Lossless Legs as a Christmas gift, and I'm happy to be able to share it this week with you.. Legion of Mary.. enough said? Probably for most of you.. certainly one of the greatest if short-lived side bands that Jerry Garcia worked in this show comes to us from April 12th, 1975 in Scranton PA. It was the 'late show' that night! Man how I would've like to have been in the house for either or both of these.. this show has that funky mix of jazz, reggae, blues and rock which made Legion of Mary a one of a kind band.. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do..

This week's second set from May 26th, 1993 features believe it or not probably the finest version of Playin' in the late 90s era. This is a real scorcher and the drums in the middle of the sandwich is very tasty as well.. Crazy Fingers is also quite nice and I'm a fan of almost any China Dolls... I hope you'll give this one a listen I am sure you won't regret it..

While I realize the traditional choice for this week would be one of the great New Years Shows that the band performed, I really didn't want to orphan the electric set from the Jerry Band's performance on December 4th, 1987 that we had the pleasure of hearing the acoustic set from on last week's Deadpod.
This is truly a fine performance from Jerry and I personally just love this choice of songs.. unfortunately the 'Cats Under the Stars' opener is missing, but the rest is wonderful, a perfect way to forget about your cares for an hour and let yourself be carried away into the Zone...

If you're not familiar with the spoken word work of Ken Nordine you're in for a treat here as he recites two of his wonderful word poems, "Fliberty Jib" and "The Island".. the music is quite good also.. I won't say much about 'Wave to the Wind' - I always thought it dreadful, but aside from that its a very good second set, especially from The Other One on, through 'Days Between' with a nice Liberty encore.. I think you'll enjoy it..

This one is a favorite not only because the second set features an appearance by Ken Nordine, but also because I really enjoy Jerry's playing and the rest of the band puts in a solid performance. Well Fall has officially arrived, and this season inevitably brings to my mind the fond memories of one of the greatest later-era Grateful Dead runs - Madison Square Garden in the Fall of 1990. When the band arrived in New York the jury was still out on their future following the passing of Brent Mydland. By the time they left after these shows, they had a new member, and any questions were answered as to their desire and capability to keep producing great music.
The show I'm featuring the next two weeks, from September 18th, 1990 is not the most famous of the run, but it is a very fine and enjoyable show. In this first set I have to point out the magnificant 'To Lay Me Down->Promised Land' closer...

Seattle WA. Not only does this show exhibit its wonderful '77 pedigree, but the last three songs really ... rock.. out. In a sense this is a show that looks forward as well as back.. and showcases where the band is going and where it has been.. I find it quite enjoyable.. (be forwarned there is some music that has been lost here.. Mississippi Half Step and Deal both cut in.. ).. but the Franklins!!

While the tape does have its share of rough spots it really is a quite spectacular record of the band as it is nearing maturity.. the incredible Pigpen vocals on 'Alligator' are another highlight..

This week we have a fine second set from July 29th, 1988 to entertain us as we reflect on how fortunate we were to have Jerry Garcia share his talents with us. This is a great example of a late 80s second set, with an unusual China Cat->Crazy Fingers->I Know You Rider to open the set. This is followed by a Playin' in the Band which really gets out there - Barlow remarked that this one would separate the true believers from those who weren't:)
I also just love the rare but wonderful 'Believe It Or Not' a song that fits the ballad position perfect and was all too rare..
I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do, and while its been 16 years since we lost Jerry what he left us to enjoy is such a treasure that I can only rejoice in his life.. thanks for sharing the ride.

Here's a show that caught my eye this week from the Wall of Sound era - this one is from May 14th, 1974 in Missoula Mountana.. this is probably not the finest show of the era, but nevertheless there is plenty here to like. In this first set, the band really gets cranking on the Scarlet->Roses.. what a delicious segway.. The Tennessee Jed and Mexicalli Blues are equally inspring, and all in all this is a fine first set of classic Grateful Dead. Set 2 will follow next friday..

This week the music world lost a true star - Clarence 'Big Man' Clemons.. Aside from his pivotal role in the E. Street Band Clarence was a friend of the Grateful Dead and played with Jerry Garcia as well. In honor of his passing, a listener of the Deadpod requested this show, and it is absolutely perfect to play this week. This was the longest segment Clarence played with the Grateful Dead and occurred on Dec. 6th, 1989 at the Earthquake Benefit that took place at the Oakland Coliseum. (This also happened to be the date of the 20th anniversary of the Altamont). I thought I would bring you the second set because that's where Clarence sat in with the band on the majority of the set .. I could be persuaded to play the first set next week.. I think you'll find this a great set.. I'm personally very fond of the Standing on the Moon, but I think Clarence adds some great licks on the Ship of Fools as well...

I think the band usually played well here - and I think this is quite a fine show. I decided to bring you the second set - it is especially well played - right from the Picasso Moon, through the New Speedway and an excellent Victim.. The highlight of this set however is the Stella Blue - Jerry is so expressive on this one - it bring shivers to me when I listen..

This week's show is the result of one of those wierd acts of synchronicity that led me to believe that it was meant to be... I had been thinking that it was about time to feature a show from 1985. I was thinking of which show to play and had seriously considered the show from Hershey PA on 6/28/85.. While this is a fun show, it has some problems - the weather was bad, the playing a bit sloppy even for 85 standards.. As I had pretty much concluded I wouldn't play this show I got a great email from a listener to the Deadpod who asked about the show that I am playing this week, from Merriweather Post Pavilion on 7/1/85. He told me about how much fun this show was and how he'd never really heard a great tape of it. While the tape I am playing tonight does suffer from a few anomalies, over all its a pretty good tape, and it captures a great time in GD history. This was the last time the band was able to play at this venue - the pressures and increasing popularity made it impossible. I think you'll enjoy this performance. The Dancin' opener is real fun, and the Dupree's is a highlight. Bobby does a fine job on the Let It Grow and admit it, its fun to hear Day Job once in awhile :)
Next week we'll listen to the monster second set, but I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do..

Ah how I love the month of May! Spring has come late this year, but I still find this month to be the most delightful... and I can never help but feature one of the Grateful Dead's classic performances from this month back in 1977. Clearly one of the greatest periods in their live performance history, while this month is well-known and well-liked I still can't resist pulling out one of these classic shows to feature this week. I can't begin to say what particular performance was the best during this exceptional period, but the show I've chosen this time is no slouch. This week we'll listen to set 1 - which in my mind features one of the all time best Peggy O's you'll hear, as well as a tremendous performance by Garcia on the set closing, Music Never Stopped.. It needs no more superlatives the music will speak for itself, let it lighten your heart like the song of a spring bird...

Frankly I equivocated a bit on this week's show.. the show itself was a wonderful request from one of our listener's for a show from a period in the band's history that was frankly uneven, at the end of the Keith and Donna era.. Not only would I call the period itself uneven, but this show as well, with the first set clearly not matching the luminescence of the second set. Be that as it may be, I decided to include the first set this week, partly due to the fact that I am a GD 'completest' as it were, and because its still some damm nice music. While it may be true that the band really revs it up in set 2, I think its worth hearing the entire show, and for support of that argument I point to the Jack Straw and Deal that we can enjoy in this week's first set.. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening!
