Dead Show/podcast for 11/16/12

This week we will finish the Dead's 9/29/89 concert at Shoreline Ampitheater. As you can see below this is a fine second set. As a Terrapin fan, I would've been pretty darn happy with everything up through drums, and content when Bob broke out the Miracle that I'd gotten a full measure of the price of admission.. however that's when they broke out 'Death Don't Have No Mercy...' this was the first time since 1970 that this classic had been played. It always brings chills to my neck to hear Garcia and Weir sing this..and they'd only play it three more times........ 
This is a fine concert all around but that is what makes it special for me..

This week's show was the result of a request made over on the Deadpod's facebook page for a great version of Brent doing 'We Can Run'.. While this may not be the very best version of that song its plenty good.. and it is a part of a pretty good show from a great Fall tour. Highlights for me on this first set include the off-tempo Franklin's Tower, and a great Bird Song and Promised Land.. Set 2 follows next week, with a foreshadowing of the Hampton shows that came later in this tour..

Dead Show/podcast for 11/2/12

This week we get to listen to the second set from a nice performance from the fall of 1972 - 10/28/72 Cleveland Ohio.. The Dark Star is clearly the crown jewel of this performance and I encourage you to read the description of that piece given by Robert Goetz in the Grateful Dead Tapers Compendium. It is far from the only thing worthwhile in the set to be sure. While some of the sound is not pristine (my apologies for that), still I really enjoyed the rest of the set, especially the Attics.. and hope you do as well. 

The Dark Star should be *studied* :)

Dead Show/podcast for 10/26/12

I know that I may have featured too many shows this year from 1972 (is that possible?) but being that its the 40th anniversary of these shows I'm naturally led to take a look at them and often I'm drawn by their quality. 1972 was a wonderful year.. this week I decided to feature this show from the weekend before Halloween due principle to the fact that I really really want to play the Dark Star from set 2.. sometimes this desire to feature a particular segment or song from a show might cause me to feature some music that might not quite measure up.. I suppose that is the completest in me that prefers to feature whole shows rather than 'parts'. This week I'm playing set 1 of this show despite some sound issues with the mix - the vocals are often too low in the mix. Nevertheless the playing is first rate, as is the typically superb song selection. I hope you'll overlook the issues with the mix as I do, in anticipation of the wonderful Dark Star that awaits next week - besides this is a first rate set... :)

Those of you who are regular listeners of the Deadpod know that I generally can only go so long between regular doses of the Jerry Band..something told me the time was up this week so I went looking for a rocking JGB set to bring you and came across this recommendation.
Although advertised as an audience tape, I suspect this could be a matrix. While I'm not completely happy with how distant some of the vocals sound, I'm quite pleased with the sonic quality of the music - I hope you will be as well.
As for the preformance, the After Midnight->Eleanor Rigby->After Midnight, while perhaps not quite up to Keane College standards, is still very worth listening to.

This is a fine second set from the Fall of 1976 - enjoy this one along with the fine

Fall weather.. I especially recommend that you savor the wonderful Slipknot.. 

as well as the Franklin's Tower that follows.. this is really an under appreciated gem. 

The Dancin'->Drums->Wheel->Ship is not only unusual but very nicely done, 

especially the Ship of Fool.. this one makes a truly wierd but wonderful transition

 back into the Dancin' reprise..

 There's no point in describing the GDTRFB.. listen to it.. 

You'll love the rockin' end to this show..

Fall of 1976 was an excellent period for the band and this week's show is a nod to the

upcoming release of 'Dave's Picks' 4' as well as a great representation of this tour, as 

we travel to Indianapolis for a show that took place on October 1st, 1976. 

We will hear the first set this week, and while it does take a song or two for the band

to really rev up, I think by the time Deal arrives we know we're in for a good show. 

My personal highlights include the Brown Eyed women and of course, the rare first-set

Scarlet Begonias. 

This is a really interesting time for the group as they are moving from the slower more

jazzy improvisational pieces and developing the tighter rhythmic structures that we know and love

in 1977.

Dead Show/podcast for 9/28/12

This week's Deadpod allows us to enjoy the second set of the band's wonderful performance from Sept. 18th, 1987 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. If you caught the first set last week you know the band was firing on all cylinders here and they come out with a smokin' hot Shakedown Street, followed by a nice Man Smart, Woman Smarter, then an excellent Terrapin Station.. not a bad part 1!

They come out of space with a rollin' Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad, which flows into Bobby doing an early version of Watchtower. The Morning Dew that follows is for me the highlight of the show.. Jerry is ON IT.. and has everyone enthralled with this one.. Bobby follows with a nice Good Lovin' but Jerry is not through having fun and comes in with a couple verses of La Bamba!

This is a real treat and we know Garcia is having a great time on this night.. Clearly this is one of the classic Dead performances and I can only wish I had been in attendance this night.. I hope you enjoy it..

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the show I selected to play this week, and it clearly is one of the better later-day Dead shows. This comes to us from September 18th, 1987 at Madison Square Garden New York. It starts out with Weir refering to their appearance on Letterman the night before and then kicks into a great Hell In a Bucket... The Sugaree that follows is no slouch.. This first set also has a wonderful version of Candyman and When I Paint My Masterpiece. Its a short but solid set one that ends with a very nice Birdsong.. We'll listen to set 2 next week, which has some real meat to its bones, but I thought I'd close out this week's Deadpod with a cut from the newly released 'Spring 1990: So Glad You Made It' set with the Blow Away from the Cap Center in Landover MD, March 16th, 1990. If you're a fan of Brent's you'll enjoy hearing this one..

Dead Show/podcast for 9/14/12

This week's Deadpod features the 2nd set from the performance that took place on September 11th, 1990 at the Spectrum in Philladelphia PA. This was the first performance of "He's Gone" since Brent had passed, and I really feel that the emotion for both band and audience alike comes through on the music. The 'Spoonful' that follows surely was a deliberate pick and is also fairly heavy with emotion.. an interesting and unique jam follows.. after Drumz, the highlights for me are a well performed 'Black Peter' and the encore, which was 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door'..
While this show may not be of the caliber of some of the MSG shows that followed, I think it was clearly the best show the band played prior to the arrival of Bruce Hornsby later in the month..

One word of warning, this version of the show contains two different sources, an audience and the soundboard. The audience provides the source for songs and passages missing on the soundboard tape.. still I thought it was quite worth the listen, and hope you do as well.

There's of course quite a lot of interest in the Grateful Dead's 1990 catalog right now with the release of the Spring 90 box set. As I reflected upon that year, and on this month, I was led to choose this show for the next Deadpod. I've always loved this performance. It took place when I was still saddened by the loss of Brent Mydland and fearful for what would happen to the band, and it reaffirmed for me the power and sway of this music in a way words won't do justice. We'll listen to the second set next week which I find especially moving.. but this is a fine first set and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

This week we have the opportunity to experience the 2nd and 3rd sets from the legendary Field Trip which took place on August 27th, 1972 in Veneta Oregon.
While I inadvertently omitted the opening Playin' In the Band from last week's Deadpod - it starts us off this week as we strap in and prepare for flight!
And what a ride this one is.. this is a show you should simply experience for yourself - music that is not only pleasurable but transformational. Don't overlook songs like 'Jack Straw' - you might be surprised there. The Bird Song has been called the greatest ever as has the Dark Star..
Personally I've always felt that the emotional catharsis that comes with 'Sing Me Back Home' to be moving and inspirational.
My words won't and can't do this performance justice. Savor this and see if you don't also feel it is music for the ages.

This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of what some call the greatest single Grateful Dead show ever. While I might not go that far, it certainly was a remarkable occasion and one well worth reliving. While the band is firing on all cylinders as was often the case during this remarkable year, its clear that there is something special in the water this day. The 'Field Trip' as its been known is a very special afternoon and evening of remarkable improvisational psychedelic music. During this week's first set, listen as the band weaves its way from some wonderful but fairly standard versions of first set tunes until the upshift into a fantastic China Cat Sunflower.. the transition into I Know You Rider lets us know the band has stepped it up and is taking us on a special voyage. The frantic pace of the last two songs, Mexicalli and Bertha, ends set 1 and we're left wondering what will come next. Truly a remarkable version, it sets the audience up for an extraordinary shared experience in set 2, which we'll hear next week.

Here's a really fabulous show from the summer of 1978.. from a listener request, one of two *great* shows at Red Rocks that ended Summer tour that year, I picked this one mainly because the tape is of such fine quality. The boys are very energetic, you can just hear in their voices how much fun they are having. Another thing to notice is how up in the mix Bobby is here - you can really hear his distinctive sound and what he adds to the mix. This El Paso is one of my favorites!

I decided to play this one for you this week - I was turned on to this version by a good friend of the Deadpod - its been called the last great Grateful Dead show. That's hyperbole I'm sure but I played it for the Stella Blue... its not the Stella Blue I listened to this week when I sat in the Grateful Dead movie.. here is Garcia 20 more years down the line.. 20 years of experience, wear and tear certainly, soulfulness to be sure. As always the song speaks to my soul in ways only his playing and singing can do. The rest of this set is pretty darn good too.. I hope you enjoy it and smile..

I have vivid memories of the trip to this show (following the blistering 4th of July show in Kansas) as well as walking through this group of fundamentalists on my way to the venue (they were all carrying brooms and Bibles to sweep out Satan I guess).. the weather was HOT and they cut off beer sales right when the boys went on stage.. but still a great night of music.. The first set has a wonderful Sugaree .. although really all of these 1st set songs are well played.. Its just a fine show from a great tour - the Summer of 1990.

Our post-July4th Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs NY during the Summer tour of 1985. This second set starts out with an interesting Stranger->Eyes->GDTRFB combo.. which is very tasty.. personally I enjoy the Black Peter (not everyone's cup of tea) and the Lovelight.. the JBG encore is far from the best, but Jerry follows it up with a very nice Baby Blue to send the crowd out happy..

Ahhh... summer's here for sure and as we head out of June and on to the 4th of July my mind couldn't help but be led back to that one-of-a-kind summer tour of 1985.. this week we'll sample one of those shows from that tour, this one from Saratoga Springs, NY, that took place on June 27th, 1985. As always on this tour a very innovative setlist, highlighted for me with a *great* Stagger Lee (not a tune I would often enjoy), a first set Crazy Fingers(!)into Supplication, High TIme (we have been hearing alot of these on the Deadpod lately haven't we?) and a nicely done Hell in a Bucket. My mind was moved to her yesterday when someone asked my favorite "Summertime" songs - of course I thought of the one and only Janis. I get requests for this show from time to time, I did broadcast part of this back in April of '06 but that Deadpod no longer exists on the archive, so I felt it was high time to bring it out again.
Pigpen and Janis on Lovelight would be enough, but there are some other killer songs on this tape - Attics for one.. The songs are all strong and well played. Great set list, the High Time and Music Never Stopped are very good, but from Crazy Fingers on its flat-out cranked. Dancin' is wonderful, but the 14 minute Slipknot is spine tingling. Hope you aren't wore out on mid 70s Dead because this is a helluva show. I hope you enjoy it..

A nice contrast to last week's show from '77, this show comes to us from just one year earlier, June 14th, 1976 at the Beacon in New York. A very different, more jazzy and relaxed style for sure... but I find it quite enjoyable. This one is a Betty board too so that is always very nice to hear. Another great listener request..
I removed a few of the long tunings between songs - they were sometimes a bit too relaxed ;)
My personal favorites in this first set are the (new) Lazy Lightning->Supplication as well as the very nice Playin' In The Band..

A perfect way to see in the lovely month of June, this week's second set from the Baltimore Civic Arena, May 26th, 1977, is as fine a set of Grateful Dead music as one could hope to hear. Perhaps not an alltime 'classic' but certainly a wonderful companion to any worth while activity you could hope to accomplish in this wonderful season. This set features a lovely 'High Time' - one of my favorites, as well as a Terrapin->Estimated->Eyes combo that is played wonderfully. Not Fade Away is often taken for granted..I recommend you listen to this one, and harken back, if you were so lucky to the times you were able to watch them standing in those circles of light serenading us with this wonderful rocker... The Uncle John's Band encore is of course, just exactly perfect.
I trust you use this good music as a salve for your heart.. it does mine good.

I know my prejudices are fairly obvious - do I love 1977 Dead shows? Guilty.. I can't seem to go through the month of May without featuring one of these gems and I decided I didn't want to spoil that record this year.. thus this week's show. This is a gem, pure and simple. Beautiful recording, beautiful playing. Check out Jerry on Sugaree, and Donna on Sunrise. Passenger, one of my favorites of this era is a swirling whirlwind of color and sound.. Jack-A-Roe is pretty.. enjoy this.. have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and I hope this music helps lubricate it all..

This week we get to listen to set 2 of the Dead's show in the Vegas desert from May 16th, 1993. All in all, a pretty darn good set, the Help->Slip->Frank features some nice improvisations by Vince. I'm a fan of Terrapin and this one does not disappoint, Jerry is in it.. The Other One and Wharf Rat are first rate, and the Throwin Stones goes into a Lovelight instead of the increasingly usual Not Fade Away.. Brokedown is always a nice way to leave a show..

This week - the 2nd set of this incredible show from 1974 - 5/19/74 from Portland Oregon.  There are so many highlights here its impossible to list them all, The Greatest Story is one of the all-time bests, ditto for the Weather Report into a wondefully Garica-jammed Wharf Rat.  The Peggy-O is beautiful.. but the Phil-led Truckin' through Goin' Down the Road Feelin'Bad is simply magnificent. I love love love the mind left body jam..  This is definitely a time-machine kind of show (meaning I wish I could go back and see it! )Hope you enjoy it just as much as I do.

This week's Deadpod came about, as they often do, due to several synchronistic events, a listener request, the immanent release of Dave's Picks Vol 2, and of course my own partiality for shows of this era. This week's show comes from the City of Roses, Portland Oregon and took place on May 19th, 1974. One of the early wall of sound shows, I think this is a wonderful representation of the band at this time of their history. This first set features some great Garcia riffs on these first set classic songs, as well as a very rare 'Money Money' (one of only three times they played the tune.) The highlight for me of this set comes with the closing China->Rider. Listen to Kreutzmann's drumming especially on this transition.. its really wonderful.

Dead Show/podcast for 4/20/12

This week I reached back to find a show befitting the 4/20 occasion and decided that despite its flaws only April 20th, 1969 would do. This one has been on the request list for some time, but it is a gas. This is of course a great example of 'good ol' Grateful Dead' with Pigpen featured prominently on Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and Lovelight, but it also includes a mind-bending Dark Star, a wonderful St. Stephen and a pair of wonderful encores - Dupree's Diamond Blues and Mountains of the Moon... not to mention the always powerful 'Death Don't Have No Mercy'..

Granted the recording suffers from some hiss in spots and doesn't have quite the headroom I would like, but if you let yourself explore where this wild band of outlaws takes you on this evening 43 years ago I'm sure you'll smile.............

As I listened again to last week's 'pod I decided that it was time to change things up for this week - (frankly I was less happy with the audio quality on that show than I wanted to be) so I'm bringing you a show with a nod to the University of Kentucky -this year's Men's NCAA Basketball Champions. This show took place back in the spring of 1978 - on April 21st, 1978. I think its strong throughout - aside from the loss of a bit of Dire Wolf - and of excellent sonic quality. Jerry is on his game this night and I am sure that this set will put a smile on your face.

There were quite a few outstanding shows that took place in early Spring throughout the history of the GD, so picking one for this week's show wasn't that easy. I think this is however a good show from an outstanding tour, Spring of 1987. The band roars out of the gate on Jack Straw, then goes into an outstanding Franklin's Tower, in honor of Philadelphia I presume.. The first set is full of sparkling playing and high energy. I'm personally fond of the Candyman, however, in the more soulful vein..
I'm even willing to give them a pass on the perfunctory 'Don't Ease' which closes the set... the second set next week is very good as well.. The sound quality is not pristine but quite listenable, I think. I hope you enjoy it, and that your Spring is busting out all over too.

This week's Deadpod features the second set from March 16th, 1990 at the Capital Center in Landover Maryland. The set starts with an unusual Scarlet->Estimated combination, which then leads into Ship of Fools.. The Man Smart, Woman Smarter that follows has a unique sound as does the sweet jam leading into Space.. I'm not as big a fan of the intro into 'The Other One' this time.. Some folks dislike the Stella Blue that follows - its just too slow for some peoples' tastes. I'll let you judge that for yourself. I think this is a fine show that is representative of a fine period of the GD history. I hope you enjoy it as well..

I thought for this March Deadpod that I'd bring you a show from the Spring of 1990, this one occurred the day following the show released as "Terrapin Station' .. on March 16th, 1990. I think this is quite an interesting show as well and well worth a listen. Of particular interest in this first set is the first performance of 'Black Throated Wind' since October 19th, 1974.. with some alternate lyrics to boot.. (I've posted these alternative lyrics below)..
I think the band was on a roll during this tour and personally I enjoy their sound.. I hope you do as well!

OK, I'm a few days late: ) still the Mardi Gras run is a great occasion to commemorate and the Dead did it up right many years - this one I think was one of those.. this week we have the second set from February 11th, 1986 with the Neville Brothers. It starts with a nice jamming drums into a groovy Iko.. the Eyes that follows won't make anyone's top 10 list, but the drums and space are jamming! For me the jamming is the highlight of this set, along with Jerry's rockin' out on the encore as he goes into 'Hey Bo Diddley!'... classic..

This next show up on our plate is from Mardi Gras 1986 - a request from a great friend of the Deadpod - from February 11th, 1986. This is one of those great Oakland Mardi Gras runs where the Neville Brothers opened for the boys (and we'll hear them on the second set next week). This week's first set, although ragged at times, and with Jerry's voice not exactly perfect, is still marked by alot of enthusiasm and good vibes. My favorites from this first set include a raging Minglewood, and a nice set closing Bird Song->Music Never Stopped->Might As Well..

Inspired - that's the word that comes to mind when I think of this performance.. this is a wonderful piece of work - surely one of the better shows of 1976, and this nearly 2 hour second set features some real gems. Lazy Lightin'>Supplication>Let It Grow.. the slow and beautiful St. Stephen, and the Stella Blue, of course.. oh that Stella Blue.. the end of which will surely melt your heart.
I hope you enjoy this, savor it and remember.... Never had such a good time....

Dead show/podcast for 2/3/12

This week's Deadpod comes from another great request - this for a show that while widely traded back in the day, often had less than stellar sound. I think this copy is quite good however and am happy to be able to share with you this fantastic show from 1976. Both sets are very well played, and I enjoy the sound of Phil throughout.. Jerry's vocals are also spot on, especially in the second set as you'll see next week. Originally broadcast on KSAN, but this remix really moderates most of the disagreeable aspects of earlier versions.

I've had the jones for some early mindbending Dead for awhile.. I finally decided this week was as good a time as any to feed it.. This week's Deadpod features fragments from two shows that took place 43 years ago, February 2nd and 3rd at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland OR. It's great to hear Tom Constanten on these tapes, I especially enjoy him on the Clementine from the 2nd.. that show on the 2nd also features the last time Bobby used these early lyrics:
"When I woke up this morning, my head was not in sight I would ask the walls about it, but they vanished overnight I could not think or spell my name, or fly there was no way and the heat came round and busted me for smiling on a cloudy day"
The 2/3 show was supposedly one of the shows used in producing 'Anthem of the Sun'.. This features a rare 'Born Cross Eyed' and a great 'Eleven'..

This week's Deadpod is like a Christmas present that you forgot about and didn't pay proper attention to for a time and rediscover it joyfully and realize it was a true treasure.. This tape was put out right around Christmas by Jamie Waddell over at Lossless Legs as a Christmas gift, and I'm happy to be able to share it this week with you.. Legion of Mary.. enough said? Probably for most of you.. certainly one of the greatest if short-lived side bands that Jerry Garcia worked in this show comes to us from April 12th, 1975 in Scranton PA. It was the 'late show' that night! Man how I would've like to have been in the house for either or both of these.. this show has that funky mix of jazz, reggae, blues and rock which made Legion of Mary a one of a kind band.. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do..

While I realize the traditional choice for this week would be one of the great New Years Shows that the band performed, I really didn't want to orphan the electric set from the Jerry Band's performance on December 4th, 1987 that we had the pleasure of hearing the acoustic set from on last week's Deadpod.
This is truly a fine performance from Jerry and I personally just love this choice of songs.. unfortunately the 'Cats Under the Stars' opener is missing, but the rest is wonderful, a perfect way to forget about your cares for an hour and let yourself be carried away into the Zone...

I'm afraid that when I think of an iconic year for Grateful Dead music in the month of November that 1973 always pops into my mind. This, combined with a long-time request for this show on my request list, led to this week's show. Yes, this is only a day before the show released as Road Trips vol 4 no. 3, and that release does contain a few songs from this set 2, nevertheless, this music is far too wonderful not to be heard and treasured. This week I'll make good on my promise to play the second set from the Dead's performance at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois on March 11th, 1993. If you're not familiar with the spoken word work of Ken Nordine you're in for a treat here as he recites two of his wonderful word poems, "Fliberty Jib" and "The Island".. the music is quite good also.. I won't say much about 'Wave to the Wind' - I always thought it dreadful, but aside from that its a very good second set, especially from The Other One on, through 'Days Between' with a nice Liberty encore.. I think you'll enjoy it..
