Dead Show/podcast for 7/5/13

Happy 4th of July weekend everyone! I do hope you had a great holiday, and I hope this second set from 6/22/73 helps make the rest of your holiday weekend even better! This is really a fine set, and as fine an example of the Dead improvisational skills as any of their shows. While this is almost a complete show in itself, this 2 hour second set features both more straight ahead songs as well as some real cosmic explorations, especially by Garcia and Lesh in the post -Truckin' jam. 

The show starts with one of, if not the finest 'Here Comes Sunshines' that you're likely to hear.. Black Peter and Big Railroad Blues are particular favorites of mine here in this first 'part' of set 2.. Once we hit the jam out of He's Gone and into Truckin' we move into  full bore jazz like improvisation... sit back and enjoy as the band takes us on a great journey here through The Other One, then into a fine Wharf Rat.. The Sugar Magnolia is a natural closer, but the boys go on to end the set with a nice Casey Jones then come out for a signature 'Johnny B. Goode' encore. Whew....

Dead Show/podcast for 6/28/13

Here is a show that is on many folks' Desert Island list of shows they absolutely must have.. its from 40 years ago, back on June 22nd, 1973 at PNE Coliseum in Vancouver British Columbia.. This is clearly one of the classics from that great year, and I was surprised when I realized I hadn't featured this on the Deadpod before.. even thought this is the last Deadpod before July 4th, I think a great version of Jack Straw like the one in this first set quite fits the patriotic theme, even if the show was played in Canada ;) 
Now there are rough patches here an there... the Bertha starts out with a pretty rough audience patch.. but have patience... it will be generously rewarded with a show that is very fine sounding and features some of the band's best ensemble playing of that glorious year.. In this first set the highlights for me include a beautiful jammed out Bird Song, Row Jimmy and the aforesaid mentioned Jack Straw, a GREAT China->Rider.. and a beautiful Playin' In The Band..  the thing is, the second set just gets better.. but you'll have to wait till next week for that one........ ;)

Dead Show/podcast for 6/21/13

The second set from Giants Stadium, E. Rutherford NJ, on June 17th, 1991 was one of the best played sets of that year. I think you'll agree that the Saint of Circumstance through Drums the band is tightly wound and playing and listening well to each other. Hornsby continues to scatter the Dark Star theme throughout the set, culminating in a flatout Dark Star Jam after Ship of Fools, (the first since June of 1974!).. The Truckin' that follows is very uptempo and moving and goes into perhaps one of the best 'New Speedway Boogies' you'll find in any performance. This leads into a Uncle John's Band.. full and well played, but he band goes back for more exploration.. into a very nice jam with an Other One tease, then back into the Dark Star Theme again... here pay particular attention to the nuances of Garcia's playing.. the boys are definitely in a fabulous place as they move slowly into Drums and Space... The China Doll that follows is just about perfect.. The boys move into a nice Playin' In the Band and an always uptempo 'Sugar Magnolia' to close the set.. The encore of  'The Weight' brings it all back home and I can't imagine leaving this show unhappy....

Dead Show/podcast for 6/14/13

This week's Deadpod has been a often requested show for some time.. I think I hesitated in putting it on the Deadpod because it was such a well-known show, and it had been broadcast back in the day on TV. Still its probably one of the finest shows of 1991, and since its anniversary was coming up, I decided it would be a great time to break it out here on the Deadpod. 
This show occurred back on June 17th, 1991 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford NJ. They blow out of the gate with a spot on Eyes of the World.. I really loved seeing this on TV as you could tell how much Jerry and Bruce were enjoying the interplay on this song, and you can clearly hear it in their playing. This is only the first first-set Eyes of the World since 1975... they follow with a very good Walkin' Blues, then a very good Brown-Eyed Women, with a fine Hornsby lead in it.. what follows is quite unusual, as Jerry breaks out the Dark Star motif, which the band picks up on, and while they don't actually play Dark Star (until set 2) the thematic is present throughout the night, and adds another element of excitement to the already interesting playing.. Weir follows with a Masterpiece, then we get a fun Loose Lucy.. Cassidy and a rockin' Might As Well close out set 1.. We'll listen to set 2 next week..

Dead Show/podcast for 6/7/13

This week I decided to feature a nice counterpoint to last week's show so naturally I turned my attention to an earlier era of Grateful Dead... 1970 has always been a favorite year, the band had grown and matured into a tight cohesive whole and the performances still contained plenty of vigor and raw energy.. That energy is readily apparent in this week's performance. This tape, unfortunately is only part of the performance from this date, but its a very nice sounding fragment and well worth our while It starts with the very end of Sugar Mag, but then goes into one of the years better Dark Star's.. quite exploratory and spacey.. The Saint Stephen that follows is played perfectly.. a wonderful rendition I think.. a raucous Not Fade Away must have gotten everyone up after that, but what follows is the highlight of the show for me, a unique jam that flows into and out of several well known melodies, Darkness, Darkness, and China Cat among others.. the boys then revisit the Not Fade Away before Pigpen puts on one of his unique renditions of 'Lovelight'...
he must have really been enjoying himself on this night and goes out into the audience for some participation!
He does drop the F-bomb on this one and Bobby repeats it in a classic GD moment...

Dead Show/podcast for 5/31/13

This week's Deadpod comes as the result of a request from a great supporter of the Deadpod.. for many folks the only show or shows they were able to see happened late in the band's tenure. This show takes place in the Fall of 1993... while I find most shows from '93 pretty uninteresting, I do think the second set from this show offers plenty for us to chew on, so I'm going to play just that second set this week on the Deadpod. This took place, as so many great shows did, at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on Monday, September 13th, 1993.. The Scarlet Begonias is particularly bouncy and you can hear the 'lightning bolt' guitar that Jerry played at this show as it allowed him to switch tones very easily.. The Playin' In the Band is nice and spacey.. and while it goes into a not entirely satisfying and short Dark Star, the fact that Jerry leads the band out of that into a long and beautiful Terrapin is reason enough to give them a pass on it.. The Space that follows allows us to recognize the 'Tubular Bells' theme that Vince introduces and that makes the jam quite interesting. Easy Answers is not everyone's cup of tea, but Bobby's leads throughout the show are consistently interesting (and we are able to hear them!) .. The Days Between that follows is a song that you either love or hate.. Jerry does a pretty decent job on the lyrics on this one... The show ends with a Good Lovin' then the get-out-of-Dodge 'I Fought the Law' encore.. 

Still an enjoyable excursion into late-era Grateful Dead. I hope you find it entertaining!

Yes Memorial Day weekend is the 'unoffical' start of summer, and while it is still feeling like early spring at times here, hopefully this smokin' hot set of live Dead from May of 1977 will put  you in the mood for some fine Summertime relaxing.. This second set from T uscaloosa Alabama features a remarkable Terrapin Station and a great Playin' sandwich.. It's really a strong show through and through, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Dead Show/podcast for 5/17/13

During May of each year, I always try to pay recognition to the superlative run of shows the band played during May of 1977. This year as most of you probably know, the organization has finally decided to release a box set of some of these shows.. While I do not generally play shows that have been officially released, I've decided to feature one of these shows that is going to be released this week. For the true collector, this won't dissuade them from purchasing what looks like a beautiful collection. For those of us who can't afford the price tag, it gives you another opportunity to listen to what is clearly one of the high water marks in the history of the Grateful Dead. 
This show comes from May 17th, 1977, and was performed in Tuscaloosa Alabama.. I think its a fine example of the virtuosity of the period. Certainly the band played a smooth, flowing style that nevertheless expressed the power of the genre flawlessly. It was certainly different than what came before and what came after.. but that what makes this process worthwhile.

The Playin'->Uncle John's Band leads into a strange and wonderful Space and Drumz. The polst-drums highlight is probably the Dear Mr.Fantasy which leads into a nice Goin' Down the Road.. The Around and Around which closes the set is fun as well.. listen to the end of it where its obvious the boys are having a good time..

Oh the glorious month of May! I'm sure its one of everyone's favorite times of the year, and of course one of the great traditions in the first weekend of May is the Kentucky Derby.. this week's Deadpod features a show that paid tribute, as the band often did, to that grand event, by playing the late George Jones' "The Race Is On".. and a fine version it is .. I really felt I needed to play it this year especially in light of the recent passing of George Jones, a true country treasure. This show however is far from a one-trick pony... it features a first set  "Help->Slip->Franklin's' A fine Loser, and even a Loose Lucy! I think the One More Saturday Night that closes set one is a treat too, and a chance for me to send out my wishes to Bobby for a very speedy recovery..

Dead Show/podcast for 4/26/13

This week's Deadpod features set 2 from 4/27/85 - the Frost Ampitheater at Stanford University.. This is a fine set, and as it opens with a Scarlet Begonias, we can imagine the delight when Jerry leads the band not into Fire on the Mountain but rather into a sweet version of Eyes of the World.. This duo is such a sweet combo that it alone would justify rating the show highly but the band turns on a dime into a Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad that in turn is also very well executed. Of course this is an 85 show, and Jerry's voice is a little rough at times.. However I enjoy the rest of the set as well, in particular the Phil bombs in the rather abbreviated Other One and the Black Peter.. Hey its even been long enough that I don't cringe nearly as much in hearing a 'Day Job' encore ;)

Dead Show/podcast for 4/19/13

"Spring hasn't sprung, until the Dead play the Frost" or so goes the saying I used to hear.. and in an attempt to conjure up a more lasting Spring I decided to bring one of their magical concerts from this classic venue to  our Deadpod this week. This concert comes from the  Spring of 1985, surely a  year that doesn't always get much respect, but nonetheless the place for some amazing shows back in the day, and I think you'll agree that this particular event was one of those.. The famous bass line welcomes us to a wonderful Dancin' and we know we're on our way to a fabulous time with the boys. Bertha doesn't give anyone a chance to sit down as Jerry rocks it at a breakneck pace.. a lazy Little Red Rooster follows.. but don't despair.. a great Brown Eyed Women is up next followed by 'My Brother Esau'.. every time I hear that song I'm reminded of a show I saw back in the early 90s where someone just kept yelling .... "Bobby.. are you still boxing with the apocalypse?"

Ramble on Rose is a keeper I think.. well played and Jerry sounds into it and it has that unique 'electic dixieland' sound as David Crosby so well described it.. It is also wonderful that Jerry  is in full and fine voice here and throughout this show.. Phil's 'Tom Thumb' is pleasant and goes into a very fine Cold Rain and Snow.. The set ends with a well developed Music Never Stopped.. the jaming hints at whats coming next week in set 2..

Dead Show/podcast for 4/12/13

This week we get to move on to the second set from April 12th, 1982 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale NY. I think you'll agree that this is one of the more interesting and well played sets of the Spring '82 tour.. it starts off with Man Smart, Woman Smarter - an usual choice given that they opened the show with Iko, Iko.. then Jerry moves into a Sugaree which is clearly one of the best of the year.. and also in an unusual second set location, this one clocks in around 14 minutes and is quite a pleasure to listen to.. Listen to Bobby on the the Estimated that follows, also unusual :) .. Stella Blue is a fine version and the Sugar Mag is a nicely moving one.. You certainly won't hear a Satisfaction encore too often! :)

Here's a show that has been on my request list for some time.. I'm not sure why I haven't gotten around to playing it aside from the fact that I did play most of the 2nd set back in '06.. at any rate its one of the best from the Spring of 1982.. this is from the Nassau Coliseum on 4/12/82. A fine first set is highlighted by an unusual "Iko, Iko' opener, a beautiful Peggy-O and a pretty crazy Mama Tried->Mexicali segue.. 
The Bird Song is crisp and a joy to listen to and the T.Jed is alot of fun.. the closing Deal show us that Jerry is going to bring us some treats in set 2..

As we prepare to turn the page on March, I thought it might be nice to pull out a really smoking show from way back in 1969.. this one comes to us from 3/28/69 at the Modest Jr. College Civic Center in Modesto California.. yes a unique venue..but quite a strong outing for the boys.
This one starts out with a strong Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, but follows that up with a deep space Dark Star... Jerry has some wonderful  leads in this one, and it threads its way through chaos and eternity into a rousing Saint Stephen... The Eleven is always a thrill to me and this has some extended build ups.. The Death Don't Have No Mercy is powerful.. as usual.. a classic 23 minute Lovelight follows, with Pigpen leading the charge. The second set consists of one long 'The Other One'.. its a high energy jam that is abruptly stopped when someone turns on the house lights and ends the show!

This first Deadpod of Spring we will be hearing the second set from the bands' performance on St. Patrick's Day, 1991 at the Cap Center in Landover MD. A fine pre-drums segment, highlighted for me by 'Crazy Fingers'... but what really brings the crowd to their feet is the east coast breakout of 'New Speedway Boogie' for the first time in over 20 years. This tune had been played on the west coast about a month earlier, but despite some rough vocals everyone was stoked to hear it! Post Drumx highlight I think is a fine Wheel ->Watchtower... although I always enjoy the Black Peter..

Dead Show/podcast for 3/16/13

Well it's St. Patrick's Day weekend! so i decided to bring everyone a dose of St. Patrick's Day Dead for this week's Deadpod... This show comes from the Spring of 1991, so there's both Bruce Hornsby and Vince Welnick in the mix.. This one starts with a nice Hell in a Bucket and a pretty good Sugaree.. Bruce is especially prominent during a squeeze box solo during Queen Jane.. the highlight of this first set is the breakout of 'Rubin and Cherise'.  The second set will come next week, but I hope you enjoy this trip back to the early 90s., a period I don't often feature but which for many folks, contains the highlights of their shared experience with the boys. 
Please note: this recording is a bit too 'hot' and has some clipping.. I hope you will still enjoy it despite these problems.

This week I thought I would share this very interesting show from way back in 1969.  This is quite a fine recording, and I thought I'd go ahead and bring you the entire show this week, although it makes for a bit longer Deadpod than usual. As you can see below the show features a number of tunes without Garcia and Pigpen; the story goes that each were too incapacitated in their own way, to continue.... the jamming however does.. and very nicely. This week's Deadpod was inspired by the new release of 'GarciaLive vol. 1' on the jerrygarcia.com website.. this release, from 3/1/80 is of course required listening for all Jerry Band fans, so while I can't play that on the Deadpod, I did want to whet your appetite a little with some Jerry Band from one of my favorite periods, Spring of 1978..
The show I'm bringing you this week is from one of those great old venues, the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh PA.. this must have been a great night to see the band, right in the middle of a string of great nights... I'm going to bring you the first set this week, and next week we'l hear set 2..

This second set from 6/11/93 features the only Eyes of the World performed on  the summer tour that year, as the opener. Its quite nicely done, and followed by another well-played Playin' In the Band... the band and Jerry in particular do a very credible job on these.. out of space, the Wheel and Watchtower are a pleasure to hear as well, but the Black Peter is a personal favorite and I think Jerry takes the time to do a decent version here.. the Sugar Mag had everyone dancing, and of course the Brokedown Palace leaves me smiling when I hear it..I hope it makes you smile as well...

I've had some requests for a 90s show and I thought this would be a nice change of pace this week. This was one of my favorite outdoor venues as a show here was, for all the hassles, usually a gas. This show, from Buckeye Lake in the summer of 93, was a blast. I think the band was having fun and playing well.

The Jerry tunes here are fun to hear and I'm a real fan of the Tom Thumbs if this era as well as the Masterpiece. We'll hear the interesting set two next week.

Dead Show/podcast for 2/1/13

Nothing beats a fine second set like this one from fall of 73.. a great mix of songs.. starts off with some great classic, rocking numbers, then a truly fine Weather Report Suite - be sure and listen to the wonderful ensemble playing at the end.. I think you'll find the Dark Star that follows to be quite memorable.. it starts off quite softly .. but it certainly explores some unexpected spaces.. the Eyes that follows is very well played as is Wharf Rat..

I know I have a weakness for this era of GD, but I think this really holds up well and shows once again, the wide variety of styles the band could play and the wide number of spaces they could take us to.

All the publicity this week about the release of Dave's Pick's Vol 5. gave me a good excuse to bring out another 1973 gem to play on the Deadpod.. 

This week's show took place about a month after the 11/17/73 show featured on Dave's Picks - this one is from 12/18/73 at the Curtis Hixon Convention Hall in Tampa FL. - yes the night before the show featured on Dick's Picks Vol 1! I know  - finding these beauties that haven't been released is getting harder -but this is a wonderful show and I am sure that those of us who enjoy this stellar period in GD history will enjoy it. I'll play set 1 this week and follow it next week with set 2. This one features some fine renditions of classic tunes - the Tennessee Jed, Brown Eyed Women and Deal are wonderful.. and don't dare miss the China->Rider - that transition is GREAT!

..... and yes its simply a coincidence that i'm playing florida shows in the DEAD of winter :)

I think this is a really nice second set from the great Fall of 1980 tour.. it contains some of my favorite songs and I think that Jerry and the band do them all justice. In particular the opening 'Feel Like A Stranger' however the following 'To Lay Me Down' is just too short and too sweet... The Let It Grow is back to full throtle Dead, and flows into a short but sweet Terrapin Station.. 

While the rest of the set may not match the pre-Drums peak, its still certainly worth listening to and remembering what moments of beauty there were....

I've been wanting to play something from this time period for some time, and while I previously presented part of a show from a couple nights later, this recording captures quite well the bands' energy and talents during the tour from the late Fall of 1980. We'll listen to the first set this week, which features a really fine 'Little Red Rooster' as well as a superb version of 'Looks Like Rain'. The set closing 'Deal' is raging...

Normally I wouldn't publish two consecutive Jerry shows on the Deadpod.. but this week's show is not a normal tape - this is a top-shelf recording of Jerry and Merle at the top of their game.. this is simply a wonderful recording of a superlative performance. Once I listened to this I knew I should share it as soon as possible - hence it became the choice for this week's Deadpod. 
This show was apparently originally advertised as an Old and In The Way performance - however its clearly Jerry and Merle Saunders. It supposedly was one of the tapes written about in the New Yorker article by  Nick Paumgarten (that you can read here). This was one of the Betty Cantor-Jackson tapes that was discovered in a trunk, but lucky for us was saved and restored by a professional recording engineer.. Not only is this a wonderful performance but a magnificent recording.. while its a bit longer than I would have liked (only when thinking of my hosting quota!) it is certainly well worth it.. 

The music itself defies easy categorization.. classic Jerry and Merle, but there is so much improvisation and creativity that we really can't label parts of this performance..

As 2012 draws to an end, I was reflecting on what shows were most requested by my listeners, and what is readily apparent is that I get a whole lot of requests for more Jerry Garcia Band.. by a fortuitous coincidence, this tape happened to make an appearance this week. This had never before been in circulation, and that, combined with the wonderful year (for JGB) and setlist ensured that I'd choose it for this week's Deadpod.. 

I loved this lineup of the JGB, and this period in their performance history. While this is a mono recording, its such a happy occasion to have a new JGB release see the light of day that I decided it would be just right for this Deadpod... I hope you agree...

This week it's set 2 of 12/5/71 .. sure this one is not as crispy as many boards from this era, but this is such a fine, energetic performance that in my opinion it makes up for all the flaws in the recording..
Listen to the wonderful transitions from Dark Star into Me & My Uncle back into Dark Star and then into Sittin' On Top of the World... these are truly exquisite.
This is a fine example of relatively early Grateful Dead.. I'm also a huge fan of the closing NFA->Goin' Down the Road->NFA.. and even in 71, when they do a Johnny B Goode encore, you know the boys were having a good time!

Dead Video collection - auction for the Deadpod

One of my wonderful listeners contributed this great collection of hard to find Grateful Dead DVDs and I thought it would make a great present for the Deadhead on your list who didn't already have this hard to find group of concert videos! 

This includes a brand new never opened copy of the Closing of Winterland DVD; the other DVDs are opened but in very good condition, some of these are now out of print.. they include all 4 Views from the Vault, Dead Ahead, Trucking to Buffalo, Ticket to New Years, the Jerry Garcia Band Live at Shoreline, and Phil Lesh & Friends at the Warfield 2006.. 

I thought the best way to do this would be to let folks put in bids on it.. You can just post a bid in the comment section and in a week or so I'll close it, probably on the 14th so there will be plenty of time to receive the box by Christmas.

Dead Show/podcast for 11/30/12

This week's Deadpod features a great show that I've meant to play for some time - the Grateful Dead's performance on December 5th, 1971 at the Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York. This comes to us from a pre-fm soundboard, but the sound is a bit iffy at times and sounds a bit 'condensed'.. nevertheless the performance is really alive and Jerry is zinging with energy. The set features a wonderful Brown-Eyed Women, the only performance of 'I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water', as well as a simply fine Tennessee Jed and Comes a Time... 

We'll hear the second set next week but everything, from the great Bill Graham introductions of the band members (if rock and roll had a Godfather.....").. to the set closing Saturday Night is spot on and shows us the band in their full youthful glory..

Dead Show/podcast for 11/23/12

This week's Deadpod features a wonderful show from 1969 - this one from December 19th, 1969 at the Fillmore in San Francisco CA. This show starts off with a rare acoustic 'set' of sorts with just Jerry and Bob, due, we hear, to Phil being late to arrive. His tardiness gives a nice treat -  the first four songs are a great treat to hear, Once everyone is back in the fold, the band moves effortlessly into a great electric set, which I decided to bring to you in its entirety. To me, its a great treat to listen to listen to the boys on songs like "Mason's Children' and 'Cumberland Blues'. As with most great '69 shows Pigpen is in great form on Good Lovin' and a 30 minute long Lovelight to close out the show..

I hope you find this one a fine way to spend a couple hours during this post-Thanksgiving weekend..
