Dead Show/podcast for 4/11/14

I think you'll really enjoy this second set from 1982... I don't know exactly what the boys were into (judging from the Raven space there must've been some tanks backstage :) but I find the entire set to be very up tempo and well played. Garcia is in fine form throughout and particularly enjoy the stand alone, bluegrass tinged Franklin's Tower. Estimated is arranged quite uniquely as well, and a strong Terrapin leads into Phil's famous Raven Space.. Post-drums doesn't disappoint either, as a fine Wheel and Truckin' lead into a very soulful Stella Blue - I can never hear that one enough and this is a real tear jerker.. They close with two strong Weir rocker's and come back to cap off the night with a Brokedown encore.. 

Ah.. to be on tour again in the Spring... at least we can in our minds as we listen to this week's Deadpod..

Dead Show/podcast for 4/4/14

This week I'm bringing out a show that was requested quite a while ago.. just goes to show that you should always let me know what you hope to hear and be patient :) This is a fine show from a fine tour - the spring of 1982. This show happened to be the last one on the east coast leg of that tour and took place on April 19th, 1982 in Baltimore MD. The first set we'll hear tonight is emblematic of the band enjoying itself, having fun with each other and really putting out some great songs.
They start out with a wonderful Jack Straw, They Love Each Other follows - listen for Brett's solo here, he really puts out some fine work throughout this set.. Bobby follows with a fun 'On The Road Again'. One of my favorites of this set is the fine 'It Must Have Been The Roses'.. which I will always stop and soak in..
The Cumberland Blues, as always is a great rockin' treat, and the Might As Well which closes the set is played in a most unique way..

Dead Show/podcast for 3/28/14

The second set of the Dead's performance at Winterland on March 18th, 1977, is often singled out because of the fact that it was the only time the band performed the 'complete' Terrapin Station, including the instrumental section labeled 'At A Siding' and here noted in the track listings as 'Alhambra'. This performance most closely resembles the studio version released on the album of the same name and the band never again (until their most recent ensembles) played the complete cycle. There are of course other notable highlights in this second set, including excellent versions of Samson & Delilah, and Brown-Eyed Women , a furious drums and an over the top version of Not Fade Away... The song placement is quite unusual as the Not Fade Away goes into a St. Stephen (rather then the other way around) to end the set. The band returns for a lovely Uncle John's Band to complete what was a most excellent way to usher in the spring tour of 1977.

Dead Show/podcast for 3/21/14

I often wait until later in the Spring to pull out a show from 1977, but the anniversary this week of this run of shows moved me to pull this beauty out of the archives and select it for our next couple of Deadpods.. 
This show took place back on March 18th, 1977 at Winterland in San Francisco. The band is already jelling into the tight unit they're going to become later that spring, and you can hear the excitement in their playing and singing as they bring out new arrangements and new tunes for the first time.. This is a show that Blair Jackson has written about on dead.net as one of his most memorable experiences.. The band was not at all perfect (check out the mistakes during the still-new Mississippi Half-Step) but still reached the sublime (as evidence listen to the Sugaree).. This set features the first live performance of Fire on the Mountain and the transition from Scarlet into Fire is wonderful.. 

Next week we'll get to hear the wonderful second set..

Dead Show/podcast for 3/14/14

March of 1969 was a seriously good month for the young Grateful Dead. The classic run at the Fillmore which opened the month showed us exactly how on fire these guys were at the time. I came across this little gem and was reminded of the energy and power of those days and thought I'd share it with you this week.
This set starts out with the very first 'Hard To Handle' and while Pig isn't at his best here I still find it quite fascinating to hear, knowing what the song would become. Following is a nice Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and the Dark Star->St. Stephen->The Eleven triad that was emblematic of this 'Live Dead' period of their history. The set closes with a good-old long Lovelight that should be sure to get your juices flowing!

Beat It on Down the Line and Big Railroad Blues are very solid as is the Music Never Stopped.. Dead Show/podcast for 2/28/14

While this week's Deadpod may be one of the shorter 2nd sets of the year in 1973, there is still plenty to love in this week's setlist. The set opens with a wonderfully crafted Playin' in the Band, which leads into Row Jimmy and El Paso.. the Loose Lucy that follows has drawn complaints due to its slow tempo.. I also think this song works best when it bouncy, but the boys go into a pretty good Truckin' followed by a fabulous Other One.. that jam goes into a first-rate Wharf Rat.. wow.. when this song is done right there is nothing that comes close... the Me & Bobby McGee that comes out of it is a pleasant surprise.. The boys close with a rather perfunctory Casey Jones, but I'm left quite satisfied with this second set from a stellar year.. the fact that this is a first-rate recording adds to the pleasure. I hope you enjoy it as well..

Dead Show/podcast for 2/21/14

When Charlie Miller releases a new master reel sbd source, especially from 1973, I almost feel an obligation to get it on the Deadpod.. this is one of those occasions and it also coincides with a request I recently received from a contributor to the Deadpod so all signs pointed to playing this show on this week's Deadpod. This performance took place on July 1st, 1973 at the Universal City Amphitheater in Universal City CA.
As with most shows from this year, the playing in my opinion is superb. One thing you'll notice here however is that many of the songs are done with a somewhat slower tempo that you might be used to. I think it works, some think it shows the band was a bit tired at the end of a long run of shows.. judge for yourself. It may not be the best show of a marvelous year, but its definitely worth  a few hours of your time :)  I especially enjoy the China  Rider the transition is quite different and Phil is very interesting !

For this Valentine's Day edition of the Deadpod i chose this set from February of 1986 - true 86 is not on my list of 'great' years, but this is a very fun show, one where the Neville Brothers opened and came out to guest with the band in set 2. The first set sets  the tone for a high-spirited, fun evening I think.. the band opens with a rare China->Rider, which, while perhaps a little rushed, is still great fun and gets the crowd amped up. The first set tunes that follow are for the most part fun to hear and played with alot of spirit, even if Jerry has some trouble on Dupree's .. its more than made up for by a great Bird Song and a very fine Music Never Stopped.. The boys close the set with a rockin' Might as Well which again, keeps the crowd in the Mardi Gras-style mood for the set break...

I felt it was high time for some vintage Dead.. here's a show from one of my favorite places that showcases the boys sick run of shows that occurred back in February of '69. This night they were opening for the Iron Butterfly - the story goes that once IB heard their set they refused to come out for awhile, so the band came back with the smokin' Cryptical ->Other One->Cryptical sandwich.... In any case I think you'll be infected by the energy in this set, and who can resist a great Lovelight? Personally I always relish a good Eleven as well..

A truly special show for Super Bowl weekend ;) - the second set, aka  the 'Close Encounters' show - from McArthur Court at the University of Oregon, January 22nd, 1978. I still remember when I first heard this show, it blew me away, and not only because of the weirdness of hearing Jerry quote that theme from the Spielburg movie - but the entire jam that builds up from the Drums and the Other One into that delicious St. Stephen!  I completely enjoy this one, and hope that you do as well.. For me it marks a real turning point for the band, a different direction than they were in the prior year and onward.. Furthur you might say :)

The anniversary of this show rolled around this week, and as far as I can tell I've never played it on the Deadpod which is astonishing to me as its truly a great one, so I decided to feature it this week and next. This one comes to us from early 1978, While this show is deservedly famous for its second set, in particular being known as the 'close encounters' show, the first set we'll hear this week is no slouch. While it takes a song or two to really get rolling I think you'll agree that from the El Paso on the band really starts to turn it  up.. The Jack Straw and Tennesse Jed are outstanding, and I think you'll enjoy how much different the Row Jimmy sounds from those that came in 1977.. The Music Never Stopped that closes the set is definitely first rate as well and is a perfect prelude to what will come in set 2. To me this is one of the highlights of the latter day Keith period with the band and I hope you agree..

Dead Show/podcast for 1/10/13

Here's a show that was recently requested over on the Deadpod's Facebook page.. since this is an excellent recording, I decided this would be a good time to play it. It comes to us from October 29th, 1971 from teh old Allen Theater in Cleveland Ohio. While I never saw the Dead at this venue it was an old movie house that saw lots and lots of rock shows around this time. The band was going through a period of transition and I think you can hear that in the music and arrangements in some of these songs which are still growing and changing. Pigpen was missing as well and his absence is surely felt here. Nevertheless I enjoy early 70s Dead especially around this time of year for some reason so I hope you 'll enjoy this week's first set. As they often did around this time, they open with a nice Truckin' .. the Sugaree is quite good as well. While many of these songs are lacking in long jams, they are all well played and I hope you enjoy hearing them this week.

Dead Show/podcast for 1/3/14

This week we stretch out the New Year festivities with a really BIG Deadpod featuring the 2nd and 3rd sets from the NYE show of 1979-80. This is a very long show, so I suppose that we  might forgive Jerry for getting lost occasionally.. he more than makes up for it on some really excellent numbers in these two sets.

The boys' ring in the new year with, as often the case, Bill Graham's favorite, Sugar Magnolia.. and you can imagine the bedlam with the countdown and balloon drop.. They then play a very nice 2nd set, highlighted with a lovely Ship of Fools and an excellent Deal. The real treats here happen in set 3, with a long Althea to open, followed by a wonderful Uncle John's Band.. The boys really get cooking on the Not Fade Away. Jerry does some amazing things during Stella Blue, and they close the set with the first Sunshine Daydream in a year.. The Good Lovin' encore probably left everyone with a smile..

Happy New Year! Well close enough ;) that said I decided to bring out one of the band's famous NYE performances for this week's (and next week's) Deadpod. This is from 12/31/79 at the Oakland Auditorium Arena in Oakland CA. While many would argue that this was not the best show of this NYE run (after all 12/28/79 was released as Road Trips Vol 3 #1, and 12/26/79 was Dick's Picks #5) there is still something magical about these NYE performances. This week we will listen to set 1, then sets 2 and 3 next week. Set one starts off strong with a great Jack Straw (listen to what sounds like the reference to Clive Davis of Arista Records in the "We used to sing for silver.. line :) Jack Straw flows into a big Franklin's Tower, albeit Jerry blows more than one lyric here.. Other highlights in this first set include a very nice 'Looks like Rain' and a rockin' Promised Land which closes out set 1...

Dead Show/podcast for 12/13/13

I've always been fond of how the band sounded in 1979, and this week's Deadpod shows some of the reasons why. Brett hadn't been in the band a year yet, but by now he is well integrated in the sound and you can really hear his contributions in this show from Kansas City. The rest of the band is quite tight as well, and in this first set the solid 'Jack Straw' and 'Loser' openers show us that we're in for a great night. Big River is rockin' as well, and the boys open up 'Althea' to some unusual spaces at the end. Phil has some excellent riffs throughout and especially in the closing China Cat->Rider.. 

All in all this is a solid first set, and I'm looking forward to sharing set two next week.. I hope you enjoy it!

Dead Show/podcast for 12/6/13

This week the exciting (and super long!) second set from the band's performance at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester NY on November 8th, 1970. The band was clearly developing quickly at this time.. and in many ways we can look upon this as a turning point, away from perhaps the rawer, more psychedelic sound to a more polished version that would come to dominate in 1971 and beyond. The set list contains some song we'd never hear again, (Mystery Train, My Babe, The Main Ten) as well as some we would hear for the first time (Around and Around). This is truly a joy to behold as it clocks in at over 2 hours just for this second set.. one can only speculate on how long it seemed :) I think it is clearly a joy to have this show documented, albeit in an audience tape, to give us a window onto what was obviously a creative apex for the band..

I always enjoy bringing you acoustic Dead on the holidays and while I was tempted to save this tasty nugget for Christmas I decided I would play it right now instead. The last official acoustic set of the 70s, the band would not bring these back for 10 years. This set, from the famous Capitol Theater in Port Chester New York, features two songs that would never again be performed, 'Operator' and 'Wake Up Little Susie'. The set features some great banter as well, showing us a side of the band we didn't get to see much in the later years. I bring you this acoustic set as my way of saying thanks to all of you for being a very special part of my life. I do hope you enjoy it.

Dead Show/podcast for 11/22/13

On this week's Thanksgiving Eve Deadpod :) we get to hear the second set from a wonderful show that took place on November 14th, 1973.. This second set in many ways is a long improvisational jam on the Other One theme, for after a nice Truckin' the band goes in and out of The Other One for much of the remaining set. Of course the set is punctuated with a delightful 'Eyes of the World' and a great 'Wharf Rat'. After a rather unusual stop they go into a misplaced 'Me and My Uncle' but end with a rockin' Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad and a well played One More Saturday Night..

This show is not surprisingly overlooked given the monsterous shows that surrounded it during this peak month of GD performances, but I'm happy to be able to bring it out and show it off.. it may not be the very best of this most amazing month, but it certainly is capable of bringing alot of pleasure on its own, and I hope that you too enjoy it as much as I did.

There is no other month in Grateful Dead History that moves me as much as the music the band made back in November of 1973. Yes I am well aware of how good May of 1977 was, and I do dearly love that period as well, but overall, show in and show out, those played in November of 1973 are simply sublime. I am happy to be able to share this show with you this week and next. So far as I know, there are only 2 shows from this month that have yet to be released commercially - this is one of those two. So far as I know only the second set exists on tape of the other show (11/1/73). While this first set consists mainly of 'songs' and not as much improvisational exploration as some enjoy I think you'll find that the band does much more than simply rehash well worn paths. Garcia finds an opportunity to surprise us in nearly every song, as he does not fail to take advantage of his opportunities to make these songs shine. This is peak Dead, and while there are other times they reach near these summits, I do not think they are often surpassed. 

I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.. its a privilege to bring it to you.

Dead Show/podcast for 11/8/13

This week we go back 26 years for a fine second set from the Fall of 1987 - this again from the Henry Kaiser Convention Center in Oakland, this second set has a unique 'Uncle John's Band' opener.. and in fact a very tasty set list. They then move into a nicely jammed out version of Playin' In the Band.. we then make a stop at Terrapin Station - I believe they some interesting explorations in that jam after the song and heading into Drums.. they lead out into 'I Need A Miracle' but what may be the highlight for me is the Black Peter that follows. Jerry's voice is still in fine form and he does a great job on this one. The set ends with a standard but well played Throwin' Stones->Not Fade Away.. The boys seem to think their night is over after the 'Knockin' encore but the crowd will have none of it and calls them back for a second encore, 'One More Saturday Night'...

This week's show was a Rex Benefit, which often meant a good show was in the offing.. this one comes to us from 1987, a year that I've recently had a request for more of from one of my wonderful listeners so I thought I"d bring you this show from November 7th, 1987 at the Henry J. Kaiser Center in Oakland, The first set, which we'll hear this week, start out strong out of the gate with a wonderful 'Hey Pocky Way'.. followed by a very good Jack Straw. Row Jimmy slows things down a bit but I've always loved the mood of that song.. Masterpiece is well played also, and Jerry sings Dupree's quite well. The crowd wants Phil and he responds with an excellent 'Box of Rain'. The band does a great job jamming in the middle of Cassidy and Jerry belts out Might As Well in such a strong way that the crowd is really brought into it! Can't wait for set 2..

What a soulful Jerry Band set to warm you up on this late October weekend.. Of course this is the 2nd set from the show we started last week, Jerry's comeback on 10/31/92 in Oakland. I really enjoyed listening to this one. It starts out with a killer Shining Star.. nice and slow... then one of my favorites, Jerry's cover of Van Morrison's 'And It Stoned Me', this one always pulls on the heartstrings.. Next up is a song that Jerry covered in his later years, but sounds like it was meant for him, Roy Rodgers and Norton Buffalo's 'Ain't No Bread in the Breadbox'.. here Jerry really gets warmed up on the guitar.. he follows it with the always rockin' 'Tore Up Over You'.. The almost spiritual 'Waiting For A Miracle' then 'My Sisters and Brothers' gives the show that gospel flavor. Tangled Up in Blue shows why Garcia was always a masterful interpreter of Dylan.
Of course its Halloween, Jerry doesn't disappoint with the wonderful Warren Zevon's 'Werewolves of London'..

Here's a show that I've been wanting to play for some time, and maybe I've jumped the Halloween gun by a week or so but I wanted to play all of this before the 31st.. this one took place back in 1992.. Jerry got very sick after the summer tour and the band had to cancel their entire fall tour. Deadheads were all extremely concerned but of course Jerry recovered and this week's show marked his return to the stage.. a Halloween performance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena with the Jerry Garcia Band. I remember how excited I was that Jerry was back on stage and how happy I was to get and listen to this tape. As you all know, I love to share some Jerry Band with my friends here on the Deadpod and I thought it was about time to do so again.. I sure hope you enjoy it..

Dead Show/podcast for 10/11/13

Whether it was the fact that my mind has been turned toward this era of Dead by the release and success of  'Sunshine Daydream' or the fact that I"m not really ready to face another Winter, I ran into discussion of this gem of a show and decided I had to feature it on this week's Deadpod. This is the 2nd set of a show that took place just after the band came back to the States from their famous 1972 tour of Europe, July 16th, 1972 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford Connecticut. While we only have the 2nd set in decent soundboard quality (and even then there is an audience patch in the Not Fade Away), this is still a gem that every fan of the era should get to hear.
This starts out with a Truckin' into a fabulous Other One.. this slowly turns into a wonderful jam that leads us into a very nice He's Gone.. The Looks Like Rain and Sugar Magnolia that follow are fine, but the highlight of the show follows when the band is joined by Dickey Betts and Berry Oakley for a blistering Not Fade Away and Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad. Just when you think the music couldn't possibly go further, they raise it up a notch with a smoking Hey, Bo Diddley..!  The band comes out for a Johnny B Goode encore but by then I can't imagine the fans could ask for much more..

This week's Deadpod features this fine second set from October 21st, 1983 from the Centrum in Worcester MA.  While the Scarlet->Fire might be the highlight of this set (be sure and pay attention to the transition and to Jerry on that Fire), the Uncle John's -> Playin' is almost as great. Personally I'm a fan of the space in this set.. I think you'l hear some elements of Sage and Spirit in there and its very well played.. especially the jam into Truckin'.. Wharf Rat is always a treat for me, and the rest of the set sends the fans home dancin'..

Dead Show/podcast for 9/27/13

This week's Deadpod had been on my list of requested shows for quite some time, and I'm really glad to have gotten to it this week. It comes from the Fall of 1983, a year that I think is often underestimated among Deadheads as I feel there are some very good shows that took place that year, and this is clearly one of them. This week we'll listen to the very good and unique first set. It opens with a wonderful version of 'The Music Never Stops' that makes me wonder why they didn't use this number as an opener more often.  Loser and CC Rider follow, both good versions, but they really get rockin' on the Cumberland Blues that comes next. True, the vocals aren't all that pristine, but they sure are having fun and Jerry is really going strong. A nice Cassidy follows, then a fun Ramble On Rose (even if I'm not a huge fan of Healy playing with the vocals)..who doesn't love this song? Next Weir shadowboxes the Apocalypse, but they end the set with a rousing Big Railroad Blues into a really well done Promised Land.. great first set..

Pigpen is here too of course, and we have a chance to enjoy him on a great 'Next Time You See Me'... The Johnny B. Goode encore is always a mark of a show the boys had fun performing!

On this Friday the 13th edition of the Deadpod I decided it fitting to honor the great Pigpen, seeing as his birthday was just a few days ago on September 8th, and this show, long a request from one of my listeners, was one of his great performances. This one comes to us from the Bronx New York, on August 26, 1971, at Gaelic Park. This week's first set is filled with great Pigpen performances, including Big Bos Man, an outstanding Hard to Handle, Good Lovin' and one of only a couple circulating versions of  "Empty Pages". Don't overlook Garcia's intro to that Good Lovin' as well as the fact that 'sweet Susie' makes an appearance in a fine version of Loser. For anyone who enjoys this incredible year of growth in the band's development this performance is a milestone. I'm sure you 'll enjoy it and we'll listen to set 2 next week...

I realize not everyone is a fan of this lineup of the Grateful Dead. Some people really don't enjoy Hornsby's contributions to the band, and you certainly will hear them in this second set from September 4th, 1991. I happen to think this is one of the best Scarlet->Fires of the 90's. I can't say that it is Hornsby's contributions that make it so but I think its undeniable that he did spark something in Garcia that was often lacking in his later years. Listen for the Phil bomb during the transition as well......This set is distinguished as well by a very fine space and of course, by the appearance of a 'China Doll'.. always a wonderful treat. I think the boys really put their all into this one... I hope you enjoy it..

Here's a labor day weekend show for you from the Fall tour of 1991.. This was a request from one of our facebook friends, for a show from the run that took place at the Richfield coliseum in Richfield Ohio.. I decided to play the first show from this run, but it wasn't an easy choice as all three shows have their moments.. while the real highlights from this night come in set 2, this week's first set contains plenty of fine playing .. Jack Straw is nicely played, as is the Jack-A-Roe that follows. The entire set is well played, and solid, and a nice long first set as well. I am always pleased to hear Friend of the Devil, and the Cold Rain and Snow->Promised Land close the set on a real high note and leave us wanting more..

I was pleasantly surprised by all the positive responses I received to last week's Deadpod -so I am pleased to be able to present the 2nd set of this great show from August 16th, 1980 at the Mississippi River Festival on this week's Deadpod. This set starts off rocking just as hard as set 1, with a hot CC Rider going into a really excellent China Cat -> I Know You Rider.. Estimated is quite strongly played as well, then a long He's Gone leads into a really trippy drums and space.. the Other One that follows is superb.. one of the best of the year in my opinion. Black Peter helps brings us back to Earth but the boys end with a rare double encore to let us know how much they appreciated the faithful who enjoyed the show in the massive downpour..

This week's Deadpod is a bit unusual, as I decided to bring you an audience recording of a show that took place 33 years ago on the banks of the Mississippi River... at the Mississippi River Festival across the river from St. Louis in Edwardsville, Illinois. While I wasn't at this show, I've heard many reports from friends over the years that this was a complete *blast*, probably due, at least partially, to the fact that there was supposedly an absolute deluge of a storm going on especially in the second set.. As I listened to this first set I thought it was obvious that the band was having a good time... I also thought that the recording while not pristine, was worth listening to so I decided to feature it this week... I'll play set 2 next week unless enough of you object to the audience source (unfortunately that's all that is available of this one.. )

Hard to believe its been 18 years since we lost Jerry...and since this week's Deadpod falls on that sad anniversary I felt that this week's show should commemorate that loss perhaps more than most do. One thing that unites us all as Deadheads is the fact that we all feel that loss.. I decided to bring you a show from the summer of 1995, not to depress you or to point out how far Jerry had slipped by then (although it can't be denied) but becuase it still contains huge moments of genius and insight into who he was and who we are and were. This one comes from the Shoreline Ampitheater on June 2nd, 1995. I'm only going to play the second set, for that contains some truly amazing moments (as well as a few sad ones)... but there was still some of that magic there that has kept us together all these years. This second set starts out with a fine version of New Speedway Boogie, a great opener.. then Jerry goes into his cover of  McCartney's 'That Would Be Something' and this is a fine version of that. Way To Go Home and Saint of Circumstance follow.. then the band goes into 'He's Gone'.. not one of Jerry's finest versions as his playing is a bit aimless to say the least.  As the band goes into Drums however one of those magical moments that could only happen at at Dead show took place as the Dali Lama's own choir, the Gyuto Monks, appeared to chant for the crowd. After the Monks finish, the band does a pretty interesting space, then Weir leads them out with 'Easy Answers'. What follows is for me the highlight of this set, one of the better versions of  'Standing on the Moon' that you will hear... Jerry seems to really pour out his soul on this one.. and how better to remember him today than in listening to those lines from this song... 

The boys close the second set as they did so often with Chuck Berry's Around and Around, but return for a fun 'Lucy In The Skies With Diamonds' encore..

Well here we are again.. in another 'Days Between' .. summer flies indeed, and as we reflect on old Jerry and the light he brought to us all I thought it best to bring you a set of Pure Jerry as it were.. no not one of the commercial releases, but still Jerry Band., this configuration with Keith and Donna and Ron Tutt and John Kahn, but mainly Jerry.. with some very beautiful playing and singing on some of his most well known songs that he performed with his own band.. These are played exquisitely. The mix is a bit rough at the start but gets better a couple minutes into Sugaree. I couldn't bear to not publish the entire show, so bear with me if this week's Deadpod is a bit longer than usual. Dead Show/podcast for 7/26/13

This week's Deadpod features some really unique music from the summer of 1976.. this one comes from the famous run at the Orpheum Theater in San Francisco, from July 16th, 1976.. We only have the 2nd set of this show in soundboard quality so that is what I'm going to present.. I think you'll agree that this is a fine example of the more exploratory side of the band that was unfolding after the hiatus of '75 and before the signature sound of 1977.. The entire run is quite worth exploring, and many would argue that the next night, with its magnificent 'Comes A Time' would be a better choice, but we'll keep that in our pocket for a future Deadpod.. This second set has some really unique music, I'm very fond of the Playin'>Jam>Cosmic Charlie.. wowza! and what a set list... not only does Samson follow that, but another great 'Spanish' Jam.. then the Playin' reprise following the Wheel.. just when you think the surprises are surely over.. we get a GREAT 'High Time'.. some folks don't care for this more jazzy or improvisational side of the band, but after its been a bit since I've heard any I am refreshed when I hear it.. I hope you find it so as well..

Dead Show/podcast for 7/19/13

Ah summer.. in the midst of its heat and humidity its wise for us to sit back and breath it in.. and savor it for passes like dew.. this week's Deadpod is of course the second set of a show that seems to me to embody the kind of setlist that a summer GD show should have.. lyrics that speak of starlight and songs that twinkle and sparkle like the summer night sky. Crazy Fingers.. Uncle John's Band.. Terrapin.. and of course Morning Dew.. even the Quinn the Eskimo reminds me of warm summer shows outdoors watching the boys .. I hope you've been lucky enough to see Furthur this year.. for all of us we have the chance to savor this recording and close our eyes and remember warm summer nights and the music that could take us along with those breezes..

Dead Show/podcast for 7/12/13

Here's a show that several folks have requested recently..and since it recently marked its 25th anniversary I thought it would be a great time to feature it on the Deadpod. This comes to us from July 2nd, 1988, from the Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford Maine.. I wasn't there but all accounts of this weekend seem to suggest it was a blast.. its a fun show and you can certainly tell that Jerry and the band were having a good time during this well played first set. The Iko Iko starts out hot and gets everyone on their feet, the Jack Straw is a great early July choice of course and the Row Jimmy is a favorite of mine in this first set as well. Foolish Heart was a great closer and I think you'll enjoy the second set that is coming up next week as well.. just be careful on the volume on both these sets or Phil will blow out a speaker!
