Dead Show/podcast for 11/21/14

All the snowy weather this week reminded me of a show I saw out in Denver at McNichols one year.. this is a great show, I think, and I decided that it would be fun to share it with you. This one highlights the rejuvenation I think Hornsby sparked in the Dead, and especially in Garcia. He's all over this one and lots of fun throughout.. This first set is marked by a fine Candyman, a crazy Mexicalli->Maggie's Farm, a simply rocking Loose Lucy and a fantastic Deal.

Dead Show/podcast for 11/14/14

We're lucky enough to hear the second set from the Dead's performance on 10/29/77 at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb Illinois this week. This is a fine recording of a strong set.. Bertha opens with that unique tempo the band was working on at this time and it sounds mighty fine.. Good Lovin' is better than usual.. Friend of the Devil and Estimated are played crisply but for me the magic starts with the jazzy Garcia guitar in Eyes.. very nicely done and one of my favorite versions of this tune during this time. St. Stephen is powerful.. moving into a heavy Not Fade Away.. Black Peter is soulful and sung with great effect. Sugar Magnolia and One More Saturday Night display the band's competence at great Rock N Roll. All in all a fine accompaniment to a Fall day or evening :)

Dead Show/podcast for 11/7/14

One of the joys of producing the Deadpod comes from the many fine folks I've met, even if only through the medium of the internet, since I started to publish these shows. This week's show comes from a suggestion from one of those old friends, and it is an excellent suggestion.. This show comes to us from DeKalb Illinois and was performed during the Fall tour of 1977, on 10/29/77. The show begins with an unusual but rocking 'Might As Well'.  A nice version of Jack Straw is followed by the appearance of the Dire Wolf, oftentimes a harbinger for me of a great night. After a well played Looks Like Rain, Jerry delivers a wonderful Loser. El Paso and Ramble on Rose follows. Then Minglewood and Must've Been The Roses lead into a spectacular version of Let It Grow. We simply have to take Phil on his word in the introduction to this gem...

Dead Show/podcast for 10/24/14

In casting about for a show to fit some recent requests, I came across this well-known yet astonishing work of unparalleled psychedelia. Unfortunately there is no Pigpen on this night (or the next) which is what my listener had requested, however I'm confident that the peerless jamming and enthusiasm present on this recording will allow me to be excused for that omission. This show starts with an excellent Dark Star (and its so nice to hear it in one of its earlier formations), then goes into a wonderful St. Stephen and The Eleven which is just wonderful - I'm especially fond of the ending jam in the Eleven - before going into a song which never should have left, Death Don't Have No Mercy.. The second set follows and while perhaps not as strong as the first, the Cryptical and the Other One features some great work by Phil, which is also noticeable in the New Potato Caboose (as sadly the lack of keyboards). The show ends with some intense and jamming and, the then popular Feedback..

Dead Show/podcast for 10/17/14

This week's Deadpod, the second set from Barcelona Spain on October 19th, 1981, bursts out of the gate with a smoking Scarlet Begonias into Fire on the Mountain. Garcia clearly wants this one to stand out, and his leads throughout are choice. Garcia is clearly inspired throughout.. even on the Sailor ->Saint, Garcia shines on one of the best versions ever... there's a nice little space that follows, then after a short drums an excellent, if too short, full blown Spanish Jam leads into a very fine Other One. The Stella Blue that flows out from that is excellent as is the Sugar Magnolia with full blowin Weir driving this one.. A fine show from start to finish, I hope you enjoy this one.

Dead Show/podcast for 10/10/14

As far as I know, this was the Dead's only performance in Spain, and while I recall wearing this tape out at one time I hadn't thought about it for some time, until I came across it again searching for a show for this week's 'pod. I'm thrilled to have rediscovered it. There's plenty of energy here as the band, and Garcia, seem pumped for the end of this European tour. This set starts off plenty hot with Jack Straw leading into a sparkling Franklin's Tower. Even the cowboy tunes shine from Garcia's treatment. Loser then goes into a jamming CC Rider with Weir giving some great vocals. The Passenger features some great Phil bombs throughout. Who doesn't like Althea and Jerry shreds on this one.. The Let it Grow is phenomenal, and one of the best of the year for sure.. and we've just finished set 1, set 2 is even better.. next week..

Dead Show/podcast for 10/3/14

This week's Deadpod features the second set from the Dead's performance at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse NY on September 24th, 1982. This is quite a fine set, and opens with an unusual Brent opener - Far From Me.. always a song I enjoy hearing. They follow that up with a very well executed Playin' In The Band->Crazy Fingers, and Jerry does some fine work on that latter number. Weir's new song, Throwin' Stones, follows and leads into Drums and Space but they come out of that with an unusual Iko, Iko. Truckin' as always provides Garcia a nice jamming platform and he accelerates out of that into 'Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad' and then 'Black Peter'... the band then brings everyone back to earth with a nice Around and Around and a Sugar Magnolia to close the set. Phil pranks Weir by bringing out a woman from backstage and introducing her as Weir's wife of 5 years, before the Brokedown Palace encore, so you know they were loose and having fun!

Dead Show/podcast for 9/26/14

This week we feature a show that marked the end of the Fall East Coast tour of 1982 - this one took place in the Carrier Dome on the campus of Syracuse University in Syracuse NY. This show was widely praised in its day and I think much of the playing holds up today as an example of a good early 80s Dead show. The band opens with a Jack Straw that is on fire.. and leads nicely into a very fine Friend of the Devil. Brent has some nice runs here.. The CC Rider is fun and of course Ramble on Rose brings a smile to my face as usual. Minglewood.. meh, but the Bird Song that follows is pretty choice, as is a fine Looks Like Rain. China->Rider to close the set is great, and listen for some hot Phil here in this choice closer.. We'll hear set 2 next week...

Dead Show/podcast for 9/19/14

This week's Deadpod takes us back to Dijon France for the second set of the band's amazing performance which took place back on 9/18/74. I have however, taken some liberties with this presentation however, as I omitted the first two songs of set 2, Loose Lucy and Big River, because the vocals in these two are hopelessly lost and cannot be heard. In place of those, I decided to include the 3 songs done as a soundcheck for this show - something titled  'Jerry's Space', as well as Cumberland Blues and Brokedown Palace. I'm not always a fan of soundchecks but I do think you'll enjoy these.
The remainder of the second set retains the audio clarity found in set 1, and while this set probably doesn't reach the musical heights of set 1 there is plenty here to enjoy.
The Eyes->China Doll->He's Gone->Truckin' is as all those titles read, quite pleasing, if not mind-blowing. The most interesting jam of the set probably comes out of drums, when Phil leads them in a most interesting Caution jam. Johnny B. Goode to close the set is quite unusual and shows that the boys thought it had been a good days' work, I think.

This is such a great show that I'm astounded that I've not played it on the Deadpod until today.. as the 40th anniversary of this great show approaches I will right that oversight. One of the greatest first sets ever.. from Dijon France, September 18th, 1974. It opens with a warm, delightful Uncle John's Band.. then the great songs roll on, Jack Straw, Friend of the Devil, Black Throated Wind, Scarlet Begonias (!).. its an insane first set and the recording is magnificent as well. There's no reason to enumerate every great song here, but the 'To Lay Me Down' is clearly one of the most powerful ever.,

I hope you enjoy this masterpiece.

Dead Show/podcast for 9/5/14

This week's Deadpod features a beast of a second set.. but what else can you expect from a show from 1972. This one features some great interplay between Lesh and Garcia throughout. Innocently enough the set starts out with a fat Big River followed by a standard Friend of the Devil and Me & My Uncle, things start getting interesting on the Bird Song.. here we find quite an interesting jam after the first verse as Garcia begins to take the music to some very nice places.. personally I enjoyed the ending jam quite a bit. Truckin' follows, always a great vehicle for exploration, and the band takes off following the verses. A short drum segment then leads Phil to bring out what is a quite good Other One, and in fact  this goes into a classic He's Gone and then *back* into the Other One.. the only such combination I'm aware of. This one had some excellent jamming including what is often referred to as the  'Tiger' jam.  I love the transition into He's Gone.. and back into the Other One for that matter! But wait there's more :) .. a hot Greatest Story,.. Comes A Time mmmmm and then a far out Not Fade Away->Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad->Not Fade Away

who needs an encore after that set list!!

Labor Day weekend.. summer's swan song so they say with the kids going back to school .. or college.. and lots of folks getting one last weekend of warm weather activities.. well I decided to bring you a show from a fall tour.. the Fall of 1972.. had a request for one of these wonderful shows so I'm bringing you the last night of a great three night run at the Fabulous Fox theater in St. Louis, October 19th, 1972. I played the 2nd set of the night before about four years ago.. but this one is a keeper as well. We will hear set 1 this week and the amazing second set next week.

As usual, this first set features a great selection of the band's catalog played smartly. These are all excellent versions, but my highlights would include the China Cat->Rider with an excellent transition, always great to hear the Dire wolf come out and the boys really amp it up with the last two songs, Around and Around and Casey Jones.. I think this is a great set to sit back and enjoy as you savor the last long weekend of summer.

Dead Show/podcast for 8/22/14

A classic second set from 1989 on this week's Deadpod.. marking the band's final appearance at the Alpine Valley Music Theater and in a way, the end of an era, as the scene was becoming so large that places, like Alpine Valley, felt they had no choice but to ban the band from returning.
The second set took place in a downpour, and its reflected in some of the song choices.. a beautiful Box of Rain to start the set, then the band goes into one of my favorites that I always felt they didn't explore long enough, Foolish Heart.Looks like Rain follows, and Weir does a great job on the vocals here. Garcia takes the band to Terrapin Station, then a nice drums and space foreshadows The Other One.. Brent and Phil do a nice job on this one and it disolves into The Wheel. Morning Dew puts a cap on the night, and the midwest Summer tour. The band comes out for a spirted Lovelight encore, before departing from the big bowl for the last time.

"Summer flies and August dies
the world grows dark and mean"

I had a request for something from Alpine Valley, and it seemed to me that this show fit best right now, this is the last show that the band ever played at that storied venue, July 19th, 1989. Surely not the best show of the year, or even of that monstrous Summer Tour, but a show that displayed the band as it was at the end of an era of sorts. A very good show in which we see the band playing as a pretty well oiled machine.. The set starts with the always fun Hell In A Bucket, but that goes nicely into a fine Sugaree, where Jerry has a particularly  refreshing jam. The Mama Tried ->Mexicalli Blues are well played with much energy, but Althea is of course a highlight of the set at least for Jerry's vocals. I was never a huge fan of hearing the Victim or the Crime, but it certainly has its place in the band's repertoire at this point in their career. West L.A. Fadeaway follows, then a very good Desolation Row where Weir does I think a very nice job despite turning around the order of the verses. The Deal that follows is as usual during '89, very nicely jammed out.

Hard to believe its been 19 years. Life is like that, those of us lucky enough to get old realize the truth in the line about it passing like dew.. I digress.. Here it is the eve of that anniversary and all I can do is bring you some fine Jerry music. This one comes from the Jerry Band back in 1978.. early show at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ. This one was broadcast on FM radio and that is where this Jerry Moore recording came from. Still sounds pretty fine to me, and I hope you enjoy going back to that young Jerry and enjoying how he rocked out these tunes.
Keith and Donna were in the band back then, John Kahn on bass, Buzz Buchanan on Drums, Maria Muldaur joined Donna on backing vocals.. What a blast it must have been that night.

Here we are on what would have been Jerry Garcia's 72nd birthday.. whew .. hard to imagine how much music he would have produced had he stuck around these last 19 years.
We get to share what we have, and this week that is the second set from the Grateful Dead's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on July 15th, 1988.
We start out with a great choice for a summer night, Scarlet->Fire... the transition is perhaps not as long as some, but there's plenty of energy here.. that energy builds with a rockin' Man Smart, Woman Smarter.. Ship of Fools follows and slows the tempo down but the band goes into Estimated->Drums->Space->Miracle which are all quite well played. The Wheel follows and then Brent leads the band into an excellent Gimme Some Lovin'. Jerry closes the set with a charged Morning Dew.. The lowpoint of the set is the encore, where Bobby is quite off key but well, no one is perfect right?

Dead Show/podcast for 7/25/14

Summer keeps rollin' by... and I thought it just wouldn't be right if I didn't find a proper Shakedown Street to mark the season.. I think this one should fit the bill. Here is a high-energy show from 1988, originally a Rex Benefit show, that gives us plenty to like during these long days of Summer. This one comes from the Greek in Berkeley, where the boys always enjoyed playing. After the strong Shakedown opener, they move into a pretty good Walkin' Blues and a decent Friend of the Devil. The Queen Jane that follows however may have you scratching your head at the start - it doesn't sound like that itself at first :) . The Dire Wolf makes an appearance afterwards, a song I always enjoyed and never heard live often enough. Cassidy may provide the strongest jam of the 2nd part of the first set, as the song serves as the spot for some excellent interplay. A rare set-closing Bertha leaves everyone on their feet as the first set closes... We'll listen to set 2 on next week's Deadpod...

Dead Show/podcast for 7/18/14

The second set of the show the Dead performed on July 13th, 1985 from Ventura California. In my opinion this is a fine second set, highlighted by a very nice drums/space into the Wheel, then a rare Cryptical into a very jammy Other One. That is followed by a particularly touching 'Comes A Time', always a favorite. While there may be better versions, I think this set stands up to scrutiny as the boys put out some great energy in this second set. They close with the summertime favorite 'U.S. Blues'.

Dead Show/podcast for 7/11/14

While we are in high summer my thoughts turned to great summer tours and despite my reservations about some shows from this year, I couldn't help but realize that this year had to be represented - 1985. The band played an amazing summer tour with such a wide variety setlists filled with extraordinary breakouts that the year deserves to be honored despite the well-known problems with Garcia's voice and the all-too-obvious tendency to overindulge in certain stimulants..
This week's show is a great example.. this week we get to hear a stellar first set from July 13th at the Venura County Fairgrounds in Ventura CA. The show opens with a very unusual One More Saturday Night, which rolls into an exceptionally well-played 'Fire on the Mountain' .. as I've heard it told, there actually were fires on the hills behind the stage as controlled burns were being done during the show.. One of the best 'Walkin' Blues' follows, the the fun Dupree's, I imagine the Mama Tried->Big River got everyone dancin', but the Bird Song that follows is dope for sure. Love to hear the Music Never Stopped that follows, a great great Summertime tune!

Happy 4th of July!

With the 4th falling on a Friday it just seems to be fitting that I play one of the seven shows that the boys played on this date. Since I've already played the 7/4/90 show on the Deadpod, I decided to bring back this beauty from the Summer of 1984.. I happen to think the boys were on a peak during this time (the night before when they played Kansas City is a great show too!), and I decided it would be best to bring you this nice long second set for this holiday Deadpod.

Any set that opens with a Help->Slip->Franklin's is off on the right foot, and then Brent delivers a pretty fair 'Far From Me'.. Estimated into He's Gone always opens up new spaces.. I love the Truckin' out of space into a wonderful Wharf Rat, which for me is the highlight of the set..

Of course its nice to have a US Blues encore to celebrate the 4th!!

This week I received some requests for more from the Jerry Garcia Band.... While I had some reservations due to the fact that this week's show is only available from an audience source, I decided to go ahead and publish this smoker of a show from the summer of 1984.. This is the entire show, albeit there are some apparent splices and cuts I still think its outstanding. While both sets are outstanding, I'm confident in predicting that the Sugaree in set 2 will blow your socks off. About the time you catch your breath, listen to Jer on 'Get Out of My Life Woman'.. whew! This is a great show with a great backing lineup and I hope you can overlook the inherent limitations of the audience source and enjoy what must have been a spectacular show to have witnessed.

There is some furious playing here - a wonderful jam that comes out of Alligator and into Lovelight. Pigpen is in his element here, and you'll enjoy him on this great Lovelight->Not Fade Away->Lovelight portion of the set.. Garcia is turning on a dime throughout and I think you'll appreciate the energy and rhythm of the set.. A great way to start off what I hope is a fine weekend!

Dead Show/podcast for 6/13/14

I had several requests this week for some 'primal' Dead.. and so I thought I came upon this fine soundboard from the spring of 1970. While we only have the electric set its still a fine example of the boys in their early formative years and I'm hoping you'll really enjoy it.  This electric set is so long in fact, that I'm going to split it up so we will hear the 2nd part - including a fabulous version of 'Alligator' - next week. This week the set starts with a great Morning Dew.. the Dancin' in the Streets is a fine version including an interesting 'feelin' groovy' jam.. Jerry and Pig trade off verses on the 'Next Time You See Me' that follows, and then the boys really get rolling through China->Ride and Good Lovin'.. the 'New Orleans' that rocks out from drums is a real treat, then back into Good Lovin' and we'll close this portion of the set with the fine 'Attics'..

This week's Deadpod features a fine second set from the band's return to the stage in 1976. I really like how they have changed up the set list here, and they start out with the debut performance of Samson and Delilah.
A nice, very new Crazy Fingers goes into a haunting Wharf Rat. Let It Grow follows and this second set spot suits the song in that the musicians have a chance to explore some new ground here. Roses comes out of drums and then (!) Around and Around. For me the highlight of this set follows, a slower more precise perhaps,  Help->Slip->Frank.. the jamming on this one is superb and its so easy to get lost in.. Saturday night ends the set and they return for an  unusual Wheel encore..

Dead Show/podcast for 5/30/14

This week we have a show I find quite interesting, the band's first live performance after a 20 month hiatus back in 1975-76. You'll be struck by the fact that the tempo is slower than you'd expect. Some have attributed this to the band's breaking in both alot of new material and adjusting to having both drummers in the lineup. This show features a whole lot of firsts -- the first Might as Well, the First Lazy Lightnin'->Supplication, and the first Dancin' in over 200 shows.. I think its well played, and while the tempo is a little slower than one is used to hearing I really enjoyed the Lazy Lightnin'->Supplication, Candyman (well duh :)
and the rare first set Scarlet Begonias. I think its really fascinating to listen to the band as it evolves into the beast it will become by 1977...

Dead Show/podcast for 5/23/14

I think this second set from 7/31/82 is a fitting treat for this 3 day Memorial Day weekend. This one is a real keeper.. it starts out with an incredible Scarlet ->Fire.. Jerry really takes the lead here with a number of very nice solos, each different and each wonderful to listen to.. the seque into Fire is very nicely done as well.
They follow with an enteretaining reggae-esq Estimated, then a somewhat fast Eyes goes into a great Drums segment, Phil leads them out from there into a very interesting Uncle John's Band.. the Truckin' that follows has a bit of a false start but a strong finish, and this leads into the highlight of the set, a gorgeous Morning Dew.. the boys warp it up with a Saturday night and a rather anti-climatic Dough knees encore..
Still I can't imagine anyone went away displeased..

Just a day before Jerry's birthday I think you'll agree that he and the rest of the band were in a fine mood for this classic summertime show. Dead Show/podcast for 5/9/14

We continue this week with an excellent, virtually unknown or heard of show from the summer of 1980, this took place just over from me in Grand Rapids Michigan on August 24th, 1980. I tend to think of this time as the salad days of Brett's tenure in the keyboard perch, as I think the entire band was firing on all cylinders and this show is a good example of that. It is a unique setlist, with one of the highlights of this second set being a smoking China-Rider. Another very nice NFA->Black Peter and quite a rare encore of Don't Ease Me In.. I think you can hear the enjoyment the boys were having in how they sound on this tape.. yes an audience with those inherent limitations, but nevertheless time well spent for us to give it a listen today.. I hope  you agree.

This week I'm featuring a tape that was just released - its an audience tape but quite a good one of the Dead's performance back on August 24th, 1980 in Grand Rapids Michigan.  I had never heard this show before and doubt that very many other folks have either so I think you'll find this to be a real treat. From the notes it sounds like not many people heard the show that night either - just a few hundred in attendance but perhaps that's why its such a good audience recording. In this week's first set I think you'll agree that the band played characteristically for 1980 - which in my opinion was generally excellent. Highlights for me in this set are a fine Brown Eyed Women, Passenger, Althea which I always enjoy from this period and a smokin' Deal to close the set. I hope you find the audience recording as refreshing as I have and can sit back and let it carry you back to those days back then...........

Dead Show/podcast for 4/25/14

This week the Deadpod remains in Vegas, for the second set played on  April 27, 1991. I believe this is as fine a second set as you're likely to find from this Spring tour of 1991. Jerry is in really good shape here it seems as he hardly forgets a lyric and the band certainly plays a wonderful pre-drums set! Opening with Sugar Mag, then comes a heady combination of Scarlet->Fire->Playin->Uncle Johns! Yowza.. the amazing thing is that none of these, to my ears, is the real highlight of the set.. That comes post-drums, following a relatively pedestrian 'Miracle' when Jerry plays a 'Black Peter' for the ages. I know not everyone is a fan of this song, but I happen to love it, and I love this version.
They close the set, with of course, One More Saturday Night, but return to do my favorite encore of this Hornsby era, The Weight..

Dead Show/podcast for 4/18/14

For this Good Friday edition of the Deadpod I've picked out a show from the 1991.. this was the first of what would become a regular stop in Las Vegas for the boys in the 90s. April 27th, 1991 at the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl. This is a fun first set, and I think that comes through in the band's playing and on the recording. 
The weather from all accounts was perfect, unlike later years, and Santana provided a strong opening act. 
The boys opened with an uptempo Touch, and while Healy had his problems mixing in this first set, I think you'll enjoy the band's enthusiasm. I quite enjoy Maggie's Farm, a song I was happy they boys put into the rotation, and Loose Lucy was always fun. Don't give up on that closing Might As Well, it has quite a nice jam in it! Stay tuned for a very good set 2 next week...

Dead Show/podcast for 4/11/14

I think you'll really enjoy this second set from 1982... I don't know exactly what the boys were into (judging from the Raven space there must've been some tanks backstage :) but I find the entire set to be very up tempo and well played. Garcia is in fine form throughout and particularly enjoy the stand alone, bluegrass tinged Franklin's Tower. Estimated is arranged quite uniquely as well, and a strong Terrapin leads into Phil's famous Raven Space.. Post-drums doesn't disappoint either, as a fine Wheel and Truckin' lead into a very soulful Stella Blue - I can never hear that one enough and this is a real tear jerker.. They close with two strong Weir rocker's and come back to cap off the night with a Brokedown encore.. 

Ah.. to be on tour again in the Spring... at least we can in our minds as we listen to this week's Deadpod..

This week I'm bringing out a show that was requested quite a while ago.. just goes to show that you should always let me know what you hope to hear and be patient :) This is a fine show from a fine tour - the spring of 1982. This show happened to be the last one on the east coast leg of that tour and took place on April 19th, 1982 in Baltimore MD. The first set we'll hear tonight is emblematic of the band enjoying itself, having fun with each other and really putting out some great songs.
They start out with a wonderful Jack Straw, They Love Each Other follows - listen for Brett's solo here, he really puts out some fine work throughout this set.. Bobby follows with a fun 'On The Road Again'. One of my favorites of this set is the fine 'It Must Have Been The Roses'.. which I will always stop and soak in..
The Cumberland Blues, as always is a great rockin' treat, and the Might As Well which closes the set is played in a most unique way..

Dead Show/podcast for 3/28/14

The second set of the Dead's performance at Winterland on March 18th, 1977, is often singled out because of the fact that it was the only time the band performed the 'complete' Terrapin Station, including the instrumental section labeled 'At A Siding' and here noted in the track listings as 'Alhambra'. This performance most closely resembles the studio version released on the album of the same name and the band never again (until their most recent ensembles) played the complete cycle. There are of course other notable highlights in this second set, including excellent versions of Samson & Delilah, and Brown-Eyed Women , a furious drums and an over the top version of Not Fade Away... The song placement is quite unusual as the Not Fade Away goes into a St. Stephen (rather then the other way around) to end the set. The band returns for a lovely Uncle John's Band to complete what was a most excellent way to usher in the spring tour of 1977.

Dead Show/podcast for 3/21/14

I often wait until later in the Spring to pull out a show from 1977, but the anniversary this week of this run of shows moved me to pull this beauty out of the archives and select it for our next couple of Deadpods.. 
This show took place back on March 18th, 1977 at Winterland in San Francisco. The band is already jelling into the tight unit they're going to become later that spring, and you can hear the excitement in their playing and singing as they bring out new arrangements and new tunes for the first time.. This is a show that Blair Jackson has written about on dead.net as one of his most memorable experiences.. The band was not at all perfect (check out the mistakes during the still-new Mississippi Half-Step) but still reached the sublime (as evidence listen to the Sugaree).. This set features the first live performance of Fire on the Mountain and the transition from Scarlet into Fire is wonderful.. 

Next week we'll get to hear the wonderful second set..

Dead Show/podcast for 3/14/14

March of 1969 was a seriously good month for the young Grateful Dead. The classic run at the Fillmore which opened the month showed us exactly how on fire these guys were at the time. I came across this little gem and was reminded of the energy and power of those days and thought I'd share it with you this week.
This set starts out with the very first 'Hard To Handle' and while Pig isn't at his best here I still find it quite fascinating to hear, knowing what the song would become. Following is a nice Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and the Dark Star->St. Stephen->The Eleven triad that was emblematic of this 'Live Dead' period of their history. The set closes with a good-old long Lovelight that should be sure to get your juices flowing!

This week I'm bringing out a show that has been on my request list for some time, I believe the reason I hadn't played it before is probably because I only have the first set in a soundboard format - the show is certainly good enough to warrant a listen as this first set contains the very first performance of 'Visions of Johanna' .. but that's not the only highlight of this first set.. Beat It on Down the Line and Big Railroad Blues are very solid as is the Music Never Stopped..
