Dead Show/podcast for 12/30/11

Happy New Year my friends!!
While I realize the traditional choice for this week would be one of the great New Years Shows that the band performed, I really didn't want to orphan the electric set from the Jerry Band's performance on December 4th, 1987 that we had the pleasure of hearing the acoustic set from on last week's Deadpod.
This is truly a fine performance from Jerry and I personally just love this choice of songs.. unfortunately the 'Cats Under the Stars' opener is missing, but the rest is wonderful, a perfect way to forget about your cares for an hour and let yourself be carried away into the Zone...

Dead Show/podcast for 12/09/11

This week's second set from December 6th, 1981 - I think any set with 'To Lay Me Down' in it is probably worth the trouble to listen to, and I think this one is quite nice, classic 81 Dead. I love the effects during space also.. (40 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor?..).
Hope you enjoy this one too, thank you so much for your support.

This week's Deadpod comes from a show that took place almost exactly 30 years ago - back on December 6th, 1981 once again at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois. This is a very well played show, and I really think you'll enjoy the Sugaree as well as the Look Likes Rain, among others.. This was a really nice tour for the band, and they are firing together on all cylanders.. I hope you enjoy it!

Dead Show/podcast for 11/18/11

I'm afraid that when I think of an iconic year for Grateful Dead music in the month of November that 1973 always pops into my mind. This, combined with a long-time request for this show on my request list, led to this week's show. Yes, this is only a day before the show released as Road Trips vol 4 no. 3, and that release does contain a few songs from this set 2, nevertheless, this music is far too wonderful not to be heard and treasured. In this week of Thanksgiving I can think of no better way to be grateful than to celebrate a great show like this one.. I hope you enjoy it as well my friends..

Dead Show/podcast for 11/11/11

This week I'll make good on my promise to play the second set from the Dead's performance at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois on March 11th, 1993. If you're not familiar with the spoken word work of Ken Nordine you're in for a treat here as he recites two of his wonderful word poems, "Fliberty Jib" and "The Island".. the music is quite good also.. I won't say much about 'Wave to the Wind' - I always thought it dreadful, but aside from that its a very good second set, especially from The Other One on, through 'Days Between' with a nice Liberty encore.. I think you'll enjoy it..

Sometimes we all need to be flexible, right? Well this week I hope you'll forgive a change of plans. I'm going to push back the second set of 3/11/93 for a week to bring you a show that was played 26 years ago on November 5th, 1985 at The Centrum in Worcester, MA. The entire first week of November 85 was marked by a number of wonderful shows and this one is no exception. I decided to bring you the *entire* show this week -in honor of the birthday of a friend of the Deadpod and because I hadn't done that in awhile.. This show has a wicked Shakedown Street, as well as a fabulous closing from Black Peter right through Brokedown Palace. I hope you enjoy it.. and happy birthday David...

Dead Show/podcast for 10/28/11

I've had a fair number of requests for 90's Dead shows recently, and this week's shows features one of the best shows that took place back in 1993. This one is a favorite not only because the second set features an appearance by Ken Nordine, but also because I really enjoy Jerry's playing and the rest of the band puts in a solid performance. This starts with a tight Help->Slip into a nice long Franklin's Tower. Althea is always a favorite, and the Masterpiece as well as So Many Roads is quite enjoyable.

Dead Show/podcast for 10/14/11

This week's Deadpod came as the result of two requests I received this week - its not unusual to get requests but it is to get two requests for the same show, both from brothers in Europe! Its a fine show, and even though I'd played a show from this year recently I think its worth hearing this one. Besides, something in the ether is wanting me to play this so here it is :) This comes to us from Wembley Arena in London England, from October 30th, 1990. This week's first set, features a nice start to the show, as well as a fine Valley Road by Hornsby to close the set. I hope you enjoy this one..

Our friends at dead.net and Rhino records have sent us some more copies of the new Europe 72 Vol. 2 CD to give away to followers of the Deadpod!

In addition I've also received several copies of two of the newly released, 180 gram vinyl LPs of Workingman's Dead and Anthem of the Sun!!
Other classic LPs that have been released include the 1st Grateful Dead LP, American Beauty, Aoxomoxoa, Shakedown Street, Europe 72, and Blues for Allah. You can get more information or order your own copies here:

Now I don't want to wear you out with entering this contest - but I don't want to send any of these prizes out to someone who already has the items..
Sooooooooooo - if you already entered our earlier drawing and did not win, consider yourself entered in this drawing.. (no duplicate entries will NOT help your chances, quite the opposite :)

However if you had the Europe 72 box set and didn't enter the first contest but would like to win one of the albums, go ahead and enter and make sure you tell me you're interested in the albums... email me at: j.henrikson@gmail.com - make sure you put Deadpod contest or something clever like that in the subject ;)

You can also enter by joining the Deadpod group on Facebook...

I'll leave this one open for at least another week and a half..

By the way, it does NOT help your chance of winning if you contribute to the Deadpod - but I sure wouldn't mind it if you did ;)

all the best my friends!

Dead Show/podcast for 10/7/11

This week's Deadpod takes us back to some early "primal" Dead, back to the Winterland Arena in the fall of 1967. While we don't have all of this show, I think you'll enjoy how tight and well played these songs are. The band is clearly listening to each other and hitting on all cylinders. Pay attention to the lyrics used here on "The Other One".
This show's a blast.. afterwards, I've included a cut from the Europe 72 vol 2 CD, the fabulous "Sing Me Back Home" from the last show of the tour.. I'm supposed to be getting some more copies of this from Rhino and plan to offer up another contest for them, I just want to have them in hand before I start to promise anything.. hope you enjoy it!!!

Dead Show/podcast for 9/30/11

This week as we end the month of September, we get to listen to the 2nd set of a wonderful show from the seminal Madison Square Garden run that occurred back in the fall of 1990. This second set starts out with a tight and wonderful Eyes->Estimated->Foolish Heart. We then go into quite a nice drums->space, which takes us to a nice quiet place ripped open by Phil as the band turns into the Other One.. The Wheel and Sugar Magnolia end the set. Jerry's Knockin' on Heaven's Door ends the show as everyone thoughts turned to Brent..

Dead Show/podcast for 9 /23/11

Well Fall has officially arrived, and this season inevitably brings to my mind the fond memories of one of the greatest later-era Grateful Dead runs - Madison Square Garden in the Fall of 1990. When the band arrived in New York the jury was still out on their future following the passing of Brent Mydland. By the time they left after these shows, they had a new member, and any questions were answered as to their desire and capability to keep producing great music.
The show I'm featuring the next two weeks, from September 18th, 1990 is not the most famous of the run, but it is a very fine and enjoyable show. In this first set I have to point out the magnificant 'To Lay Me Down->Promised Land' closer...
Enjoy and may the fall treat you gently, my friends.

Dead Show/podcast for 9 /9/11

This week on the Deadpod I decided to feature a show from the fall of '77.. probably not the time of that year that usually comes to mind but this show, in my opinion, deserves some recognition.. this was performed on September 29th in
Seattle WA. Not only does this show exhibit its wonderful '77 pedigree, but the last three songs really ... rock.. out. In a sense this is a show that looks forward as well as back.. and showcases where the band is going and where it has been.. I find it quite enjoyable.. (be forwarned there is some music that has been lost here.. Mississippi Half Step and Deal both cut in.. ).. but the Franklins!!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Dead Show/podcast for 9/2/11

On this holiday weekend I decided to bring you a complete show from one of my very favorite venues - the Starlight Theater in Kansas City, MO.. This show took place 26 years ago on September 3rd, 1985. While Jerry may not have been in the best of voice that summer, I do have to give the boys props for mixing up the setlists on that tour, and this is a great example of that. I hope you enjoy the show - for me the highlights are a wonderful Eyes of the World, and I suppose I've never heard a 'Comes A Time that didn't move me...
