Dead Show/podcast for 01/29/2010

This week's Deadpod features, yes, another show from 1973.. but speaking of *this* show as 'another show from 73' strikes me as a sacrilege simply because not only was this show, my baptism to the Grateful Dead, its one of their all-time classics, in my opinion.
While its true that your brains won't be melted until the Dark Star in the second set, the first set which we will play this week, features plenty of 'Good Old' Grateful Dead to get your blood flowin' during these cold Winter days....

Grateful Dead - December 6, 1973
Public Hall - Cleveland, OH
Set 1:
Bertha
Mexicali Blues
Loser
Black Throated Wind
They Love Each Other
Beat It On Down The Line
Deal
El Paso
Row Jimmy
Greatest Story Ever Told
China Cat Sunflower ->
I Know You Rider
Around And Around

Thank you Professor for putting up such great music. Being unemployed I truly look forward to every Friday to take my mind off of a stressful situation. I'll listen to this this morning as I venture into center city philadelphia for a job interview.

    Thanks again,
    Bill

  2. Howdy Professor!
Love the story behind this one for sure! Must be pretty darn sweet to have seen them in 1973. Burning the midnight oil, post at 4:20AM...yikes! You go dawg with sharing this great music! From the opening sounds of Bertha to China/Rider, what a dream it must have been.

    Dear Professor,

I also was at this show. I was living in Columbus at that time and made the trip up I-71. In my opinion, that era (before Jerry sadly fell in love with heroin) was the greatest in the Dead's history.
I'd be curious if you have ever played my first Dead show from which Dick's Picks #2 came. That was when Dick's Picks were single CDs and therefore had only the last half of the second set, not the whole show. I would be very happy to hear the entire thing.
    Thanks,
    Don

Xlt choice, Professor--one of my faves as well, from one of their most distinctive and fine tours. As great as the Winterland run was, they went even higher on the eastern swing. Billy's work was especially notable. Re Donna's absence, wasn't she either pregnant or had just delivered (Zion?)?

What a wonderful treat to have heard such a fine show the first time around! Having been born in 1973, my first show was not until 07-13-89 at RFK Stadium. Sadly, I can't say that I remembered a darn thing about it, from a musical standpoint. But, I tracked it down recently, and listened to it for the first time since being there and experiencing it live. I was more than pleased to discover that it was a VERY well-played show, and that some classic tunes were featured. Although I lament the fact that, at the tender age of 15, I was not as knowledgeable about Dead music as I am today--and, therefore, I wasn't really cognizant at the time of what a tremendous treat that show was, it's nice to know that my first was a good one! We all have to start somewhere.
