Dead Show/podcast for 6/23/16

It took me quite alot of consideration before I decided upon this week's Deadpod. There are a large number of great shows to choose from that took place in the latter part of June over the years, but I decided upon a show from one of my most favorite years - 1973.  This show is from June 26th, 1973 the Seattle Center Arena, in Seattle Washington. This show has some issues - the first three songs come from an audience source and I hope you are patient as while the sound quality here is not pristine, the rest of the soundboard tape more than makes up for it. This first set beings with a relaxed and sprightly 'Casey Jones'.. a little different from the set-closing or encore versions you might be accustomed to,. but goes into a high energy 'Greatest Story Ever Told'. Weir shines on these as he does throughout the set. What follows is an amazing number of very well played standards.. highlights to my ears being the 'Jack Straw', the Deal, a wonderful 'China->Rider' and they stretch out their jamming chops on the set closing 'Playin' In The Band'.. just to warm us up for set 2, which we'll experience next week..

Dead Show/podcast for 6/17/16

This week we feature the second set from the band's 15th Anniversary show which took place on June 8th, 1980 at Folsom Field at the University of Colorado in Boulder Colorado. A very nice 'Feel Like A Stranger' opens things up, and I think it contains more than its usual share of Garcia explorations.. 'Ship of Fools' follows, it always struck me as almost anthem-like in how it skates over the edges of politics... much needed these days.. 'Estimated Prophet' marks the start of the meat of this set.. the jam gets out there quickly and before we know it Garcia leads us into the 'Eyes of the World' that follows. This version is a real scorcher.. blasting along before shifting into the rhythms that flow into Drums and Space.. 'Saint of Circumstance' leads into a quieter but beautiful 'Black Peter'.. Sugar Mag ends the set, but the boys return for a double encore, which reaches it's apex with a nice 'Brokedown Palace'.

Dead Show/podcast for 6/10/16

36 years ago this week the band performed at what was billed as their '15th Anniversary Concert', at Folsom Field at the University of Colorado in Boulder Colorado. While the band members denied that the date held any special significance at the time, the setlist and level of musicianship that emerged belied that. This first set opens with just an incredible, and unheard of, Uncle John's Band-> Playin' In the Band->Uncle John's Band combo! Talk about putting the pedal down... They go on to play some outstanding versions of some of our favorite standards, ending the set with a wonderful Alteha->Looks like Rain, Deal.. I'm quite certain you'll enjoy this show, and while it was a request for some time, I must apologize for taking so long to getting around to airing it.

Dead Show/podcast for 6/3/16

This week we are treated to the fine audience recording of the second set of the band's performance back on May 6, 1978 at Patrick Field House at the University of Vermont in Burlington VT.
This is a continuation of the fine Garcia performance put on last week in Set 1. We are treated to some wonderful vocals and even better jamming in this second set. The Samson is a perfect start to get the ball rolling, then Donna delivers on a very pretty Sunrise. Terrapin follows and I'm sure those in attendance were digging the voyage. The band then turn in a 16 minute Playin' in the Band, highlighted by a delightful jam that for me is clearly the highlight of the set if not the show. Wharf Rat however, especially at the end, is tight as well. They close with a predictable if still rockin', Sugar Magnolia and One More Saturday Night encore..
