This second set is all that I have from this show, but while it may not be pristine quality it is quite enjoyable to listen to and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do..

This week we will finish listening to the 2nd set of the Grateful Dead's historic 10/16/74 performance at Winterland in San Francisco. Dead Show/podcast for 11/09/07

This week a new soundboard release of the first of the five "retirement" shows from the Winterland from October of 1974. These justly famous shows were of course immortalized on "The Grateful Dead Movie" but deserve to be enjoyed individually as much as possible. Phil's spectacular playing more than makes up for Donna's occasional off-key wailing ;).

This is a *huge* file folks, and I hope that you are all able to listen to this and enjoy this really unique show. I'm doing this as a favor to one of the friends of the Deadpod who is running in this weekend's NYC Marathon, and hoped to get to hear a complete show. Thanks for your understanding and we'll see how this one goes - I couldn't possibly post something this large every week, but what the hell, let's see how it goes!! This week we'll hear the remainder of the great show from June 26th, 1984 from the Merriweather Post Pavilion. There's even a 'Day Job' encore - it had been long enough that I'd heard one of these that I enjoyed it ;) I hope you'll enjoy this great set too..

Dead Show/podcast for 09/28/07

It took me a bit to decide what to bring you this week, but after I ran across this show I knew it was the right choice.. This is one of those classic live Dead sets from 1969, this one comes from Boulder CO, April 13th. It features everything you'd expect - great Pigpen raps, wild, far-out jamming and some magnificent moments from Garcia - most notably on the Dark Star and the Eleven. Personally, I'm always blown away by a really well-played and heartfelt Death Don't Have No Mercy - it ends the set I'm bringing you this week. I hope you enjoy it...
(note there are some anomalies - Lovelight cuts early, Doin' that Rag is cut at the start and the Dark Star has a splice.. still I think the outstanding quality more than makes up for them.... )

Date 4/13/69 - Sunday

Not only does this 500+ page book contain the lyrics of all of the original GD compositions (and many of the covers), but it also contains a huge wealth of background information on the sources and meaning of the characters and references in the songs. Its a hugely fun read, and all you have to do to have a chance to win your copy is to send me an email at: j.henrikson@gmail.com

Special Deadpod interview - Lee Johnson

Hello Friends!
An extra deadpod this week - this is an interview that I had with Lee Johnson, Conductor and composer of Dead Symphony #6.
Mr. Johnson talks about the process of bringing the Grateful Dead into the classical world and about why he thought their work merited being made into a symphony. I've provided several musical samples of the work as well, so you can hear just what a great job he did on this project.
Dead Symphony #6 is available at http://deadsymphony.com

Dead Show/podcast for 05/04/07

Thirty years ago, at the beginning of May 1977, the Dead played a remarkable number of exceptional concerts. In honor of the thirtieth anniversary of this unmatched period in Grateful Dead history I decided to bring you one of, if not the most famous concert of May, 1977. The Dead's performance on May 8th, 1977 is widely regarded as one of the best of this series of shows. While I often prefer to bring you less well-known shows, there's also nothing wrong with listening to one of these truly classic shows on occasion. I hope you enjoy it..

One other note, KOPN 89.5 FM is holding a spring fund raising drive to try and raise funds to cover our operating expenses. If you'd consider making a contribution by clicking on the paypal "contribute now" button on the right hand side of the blog I'd really appreciate it!

Here's a real treat from 1969.. this show starts with a great acoustic set, occasioned, says Jerry, because Billy has been delayed on his way there.. this week I'm bringing you both the acoustic and electric set (I've had to remove a couple of songs who were just cut too badly to broadcast). While there are several unfortunate cuts, I'm sure you're going to enjoy this beautiful and sometimes raucous, performance.

Bumperstickers are IN! - KOPN Fund Drive

At long last, and due to the efforts of several of my loyal and talented listeners, I have brand new Deadpod bumperstickers!
I'd be more than happy to send one of these out to anyone who either makes a contribution to the Deadpod and KOPN, or if you've done that recently, to anyone who sends me a SASE.. Details below..

I could NOT decide between the two versions.. let me know which one you want when you request yours!!!

KOPN 89.5 FM is also conducting a "Keep It Quiet" Fundraising Drive.. if the station raises its goal of $30,000 by May 6th, they will CANCEL the fundraising drive.. So your contributions now will help us to substantially shorten the fundraising time! And you can get a sticker too :)

If you're making a contribution using the 'contribute now' button, just drop me an email telling me if you want the 'stealie' version or the 'be grateful' version.. same thing if you're sending me a business sized self-addressed stamped envelope. If you're sending me an envelope, I'd love it if you could send along a couple bucks to cover the cost of the sticker..

If you're sending the envelope, address it to:
John Henrikson
1605 Skylane Dr.
Columbia MO 65202-1712

be sure you have a self addressed, stamped envelope inside with that $2. :)

I hope you enjoy these, I think they came out really really well!!!

all the best,
the professor

Help me design a deadpod bumper sticker!

Friends, over time I've had different people ask if I had a bumpersticker or t-shirt to promote the deadpod... I think it might be time to try and make one! but I need your help.. I'm asking you to contribute your ideas/drawings/designs for a deadpod bumpersticker/logo to be used to promote the show..

Please email me your ideas/drawings/suggestions.. I'll be happy to send a copy of the new GD Cow Palace CD to whoever suggests the winning design..

In the "open source" spirit of the music and the deadpod, your submissions will not be copywritten, nor will I do so (you might check out the creative commons for an example of a less restrictive license that allows me to use your work on our bumperstickers)..

I know there are some very creative folks who listen to the show, and I hope that some of you might be moved to help me create a wonderful new bumpersticker or other promotional materials for the show..

Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks SO much for your support!
