Dead Show/podcast for 6/30/23

This week is a first for the Deadpod as I've decided to bring you a fine audience recording of one of the recent Dead & Company Final Tour shows. This is from Philadelphia on June 15, 2023.

I think this tour has to rank among one of, if not the best, run that Dead & Co. has performed, and since they do not plan to tour after this I felt it worthwhile to try and document at least one of these fine performances. I'm not claiming this is the finest show on the tour - I haven't had the chance to hear all the shows, but it is a very fine recording thanks to Jeff Travitz who recorded the show. I do hope you enjoy it.

I'll play set 2 next week.

Dead Show/podcast for 6/23/23

This week we feature the second set from the performance on June 22, 1976 near Philadelphia PA.

Again, an unusual opener, with a jazzy 'Playin' going into an intense 'Space Jam' - this one featuring the 'Happiness is Drumming' themes that later developed into 'Fire on the Mountain'. 'The Wheel' follows, with its own spacy elements, including some great Phil riffs, before going back into the 'Playin' reprise. The 'Samson' is strong, and the 'Eyes' pretty speedy for this period. The remainder of the show features some nice rocking - 'Dancin', 'Around and Around' and a great 'Goin' Down the Road' into 'Saturday Night'..

Dead Show/podcast for 6/16/23

This week the Deadpod returns to 1976, for a sweet show that took place at the Tower Theater near Philadelphia PA on June 22.

A great first set starts out with an unusual 'U.S. Blues' opener, then continues to surprise with a nice 'Music Never Stopped', then an excellent 'Crazy Fingers' into a sweet, soulful 'Comes A Time'. A rocking 'Big River' gets the train rolling with 'Tennessee Jed' following. Weir does a soulful 'Looks Like Rain' and Jerry stays in the romantic mood with 'They Love Each Other' Following 'Cassidy' another unusual first set choice, 'Ship of Fools' follows. They close this first set with 'The Promised Land.

Dead Show/podcast for 6/9/23

This week we return to Deer Creek for the second set of the band's performance on June 9, 1991.

This second set opens with a scorching Scarlet>Fire.. the boys put it together here, with Jerry adding some nice flute-like touches and Hornsby pulling out the squeezebox during Fire.. one of the best of the year for sure. 'Truckin' follows, with an excellent closing jam into 'New Speedway Boogie' which had recently come out of retirement. Out of Space there is an excellent 'I Need A Miracle' which goes into a wonderful 'Standing on the Moon'. Jerry is wailing on the closing 'I'd rather be with you! ' and is obviously enjoying himself. The band puts it together for a rousing 'Sugar Magnolia' to close the set. 'The Weight' slows things down as they say good bye to Indiana for another year...

Dead Show/podcast for 6/2/23

Summer is here, and it's time for a classic Summer show, this one from the Summer tour of 1991, a very good tour in my opinion.

This week I decided to share the first set of the show from June 7, 1991 at Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana, a favorite stop on the latter day tour trail.

This set starts with a fine 'Half-Step', Jerry has a wonderful closing jam on this one.  The Rooster that follows shows Vince doing some sampling on the Hammond organ. 'Stagger Lee', while far from my favorite Dead tune, is done with justice here. They really smoke 'Maggie's Farm', and I'm always appreciative of a good 'Loser' You'll hear Hornsby throughout this performance as some have complained he is too aggressive here, while I am still appreciative of what he brought to the sound.
