Dead Show/podcast for 7/19/13

Ah summer.. in the midst of its heat and humidity its wise for us to sit back and breath it in.. and savor it for passes like dew.. this week's Deadpod is of course the second set of a show that seems to me to embody the kind of setlist that a summer GD show should have.. lyrics that speak of starlight and songs that twinkle and sparkle like the summer night sky. Crazy Fingers.. Uncle John's Band.. Terrapin.. and of course Morning Dew.. even the Quinn the Eskimo reminds me of warm summer shows outdoors watching the boys .. I hope you've been lucky enough to see Furthur this year.. for all of us we have the chance to savor this recording and close our eyes and remember warm summer nights and the music that could take us along with those breezes..

Thanks for bringing back the memories of an extraordinary weekend in Maine 25 years ago! Great fun camping out on farms of very nice local folks who told us they loved us mellow Deadheads after troubled visits from crowds attending a heavy metal festival the previous week.

Little Feat opened this night (and the next), which added to the incredibly positive vibes inside the 1/4 mile speedway. I was up close during first set, band smiling and joking with us. Then as the sun went down we migrated toward the back, where the sound was good and lots of space to dance, play hack sack, and just be. 2nd set was terrific, though this SBD doesn't really capture it fully. (For those interested, there is a Matrix circulating.) Never seen so many people smiling and hugging as I did after the final notes of The Mighty Quinn.

What a great show, both sets! I don't have the precise, esoteric musical vocabulary to describe this well, but I really enjoyed the nature of Jerry's guitar's sound in this show. For instance, in earlier years, the guitar work in middle part of PITB would feature somewhat of a distorted, wha-wha sound, whereas the sound throughout this show is more clear. I also wanted to mention that I love when a spacey, amorphous space "recondenses" into a beautiful, melodic Wheel, as it did here. Jerry was smoking on Watchtower; and I really, truly listened to all of the lyrics for Quinn The Eskimo for the very first time here, and I found them to be quite fun...can't say for sure that I understand what all of it means, but it made me smile!
