Dead Show/podcast for 1/1/16

Happy New Year!
It just wouldn't be right if I didn't feature a NYE show on this date, and while many of the shows that the band played on New Years Eve were a bit of a letdown, I think I've chosen one that wasn't.. this comes to us from New Years Eve 1981. While the boys opened with an acoustic set with Joan Baez, I had to spare you that and omit it from this podcast. I did not however, omit anything else - over three and a half hours of great Dead awaits you in this special New Years' podcast. All three sets including a wonderful Shakedown Street opener, an unusual Iko,Iko to ring in the New Year, Terrapin Station, a fabulous Morning Dew which closes set 2, and an excellent Dark Star to open set 3. I hope you have plenty of time to savor this Deadpod over the holiday weekend, and I sure hope you enjoy it!

Merry Christmas!

As always, our Christmas Deadpod features some fine acoustic Dead.. this selection comes from a very special show - it took place back on December 6th, 1980 at the Mill Valley Recreation Center in Mill Valley California. The boys put on an acoustic set for some special needs children and young adults and while the performance was not amplified, it was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson. While there are acoustic sets that perhaps sound clearer or a big louder, surely there aren't any that come closest to the spirit of the holidays. I hope you enjoy these songs as you spend a peaceful, loving holiday with your family.

I am certain that you'll enjoy this second set from the Dead's performance back on November 29th, 1980 in Gaineville, Florida. I found this a delight to listen to ,especially the transitions between songs.. those jams are full of life and fire! They start with a great Shakedown Street, which flows nicely into a Franklin's Tower.The Estimated that follows is Soooooo good, in my opinion.. and not only do they not go into Eyes, they go into an interesting He's Gone.. I think you'll find the music to be very creative  and the space and drums is very interesting.. the Stella Blue that follows the Other One is very powerful.. You'll enjoy the Good Lovin' and Casey Jones which ends this one..

As we head into the home stretch on 2015, I've decided to bring you another one of my favorites from 1980... this show took place at the University of Florida, Alligator Alley, on November 29th, 1980. This is a day after the show included on '30 Trips Around the Sun' and a day before the show immortalized on Dick's Picks' 8, Atlanta , 11/30/80. The boys were definitely on a roll and I hope you'll enjoy this fine audience recording of this performance this week and set 2 next week.
Being 1980 they roll out with a rocking Alabama Getaway into Promised Land. A wonderful Candyman follows, then Bobby takes over for a New, NEW Minglewood Blues, followed by a nice, lazy Row Jimmy. Mama Tried into Mexicali follows but then we have an excellent Althea. Sailor ->Saint leads us into the set closing Don't Ease Me In..

Dead Show/podcast for 12/4/15

This week we have some great fun from the second set of the Dead's performance at the Milkweg in Amsterdam, Netherlands back on October 16th, 1981. This week we get to hear the electric set of this impromptu performance, when the band played on borrowed instruments in a club environment. This set is very much a Bobby dominated set, with the boys opening with a nice Playin' in the Band. Then they pull out 'Hully Gully' for the one and only time they ever played it.. this goes into the Wheel, then Bobby takes over for a Samson and Delilah. This then goes into Gloria, and then, for the first time in over 10 years, Bobby leads the boys into a Lovelight. From there they seque into Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad before returning to Playin' In the Band. A nice long Black Peter follows, then the boys end the evening with a spirited Sugar Magnolia.. No encore, but from everything I've read, none was needed. A special evening from all accounts.

This week's Deadpod features a fine second set from November 21st, 1985 at the Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland CA. Energetic and well-played throughout this one features a fine set list with two songs that would never again be played by the band, 'She Belongs to Me' and 'Walkin' The Dog'...
They open with a wonderful 'Shakedown Street' that rather oddly, goes into a great 'Crazy Fingers'.. I've read that the curtain went up behind the band to a wonderful 'Blues from Allah' mural at that point in the show.... this goes into a nicely played 'Playin' In the Band' with a great jazzy jam leading into the final GD version of 'She Belongs to Me'.. love hearing Garcia sing this.. following drums and space they go into 'The Other One' without the bombs.. Wharf Rat follows then a return to Playin' in the Band and a maniacal 'Gimme Some Lovin' flows into 'In The Midnight Hour'.. the boys return for the 'Walkin' the Dog' encore.. whew!

Yikes! Friday the 13th! but not only is it Friday the 13th it is ODD day! - 11/13/15 :)
I decided such an auspicious occasion deserved an unusual show and I think this one fits the bill. It features *three* songs that would never be played by the band again - one in this first set and the other two in the second set that we'll hear next week.
This is from November 21st, 1985 at the Kaiser in Oakland CA. The show beings with a song that hasn't been played in over 15 years - 'Big Boy Pete'.. they then move into a fun 'Dire Wolf'.. 'Little Red Rooster' features some great Hammond organ from Brett. 'Brown-Eyed Women' follows, always a favorite and in the Uncle->Mexicali that follows Jerry does some fine pickin'.. The set closes with a Ramble on Rose->Looks Like Rain->Might As Well.. It is not a very long first set, nevertheless I hope you enjoy it!
Next week we'll listen to the second set with *two* songs that receive their final performance...

Dead Show/podcast for 11/6/15

This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance on November 2nd, 1979 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. The set starts off quite uptempo with a great 'I Need a Miracle' going into a rousing version of 'Bertha'. Bobby performs a fine rendition of 'Lost Sailor' which goes into again a nice uptempo 'Saint of Circumstance'. The highlight of the set follows, at least for myself, which is the fine Drums->Space and in particular the excellent jam which flows from that into a powerful 'Not Fade Away'. A delicate 'Stella Blue' is a perfect counterpoint here, and then the band goes into a set closing 'Sugar Magnolia'. They return for a fine 'Casey Jones' encore.

Dead Show/podcast for 10/30/15

This week's Deadpod features another great request from one of my listeners, this time for the Dead's performance on November 2nd, 1979 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale N.Y. The first set starts with an amazing sequence of Mississippi Half-Step into a wonderful Franklin's Tower, marred just a bit by the fact that the first 2 minutes of the Half-Step are missing from the soundboard tape. I just love Garcia as he across the Rio Grandio.. :) These two songs along go on for a half hour! What a great opening to this show. The rest of the first set, while somewhat predictable by late 70s standards is pleasing and well-played including a very nice Lazy Lightning->Supplication by Bob and a set closing Deal.
I'll play set 2 next week.

Dead Show/podcast for 10/23/15

This week on the Deadpod we'll finish hearing the end of the third set of the band's performance on 10/10/80 at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco CA. This section starts with a wonderful verison of 'Big Railroad Blues' one of my favorite rockers. Then we get a nice jam that follows in 'Estimated Prophet' into 'Eyes of the World'.  This is probably my personal highlight of this week's set as the boys do a great job on a personal favorite. A long drums and space follows as befits a show of this length, and leads us into Truckin' and then a haunting Black Peter. Unfortunately this is where the soundboard disappears and we are listening to the remainder of this set on a pretty decent audience recording. The band closes the night with a pair of good old time rockers, Around and Around and Promised Land, and return for a US Blues encore. All in all quite an evening, and I hope you've enjoyed hearing this show in its' entirety the last three weeks..

Dead Show/podcast for 10/16/15

We'll continue this week with the Grateful Dead's performance during one of their historic runs at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco, CA on October 10th, 1980. This week we will finish listening to the first electric set and being hearing set 3. While the sound quality may not be as wonderful as that for the acoustic set, I still really enjoy hearing them on these songs. We start with a 'Beat It on Down the Line', then an excellent 'Row Jimmy', and 'New Minglewood Blues'. I think they kick things up a notch now, with an outstanding 'Althea' followed by one of the all time best 'Jack Straw's that I think you'll ever hear. Set 3 starts out with probably the highlight of the electric sets, a scorching 'Scarlet->Fire'.. We'll close this week's Deadpod with the 'Samson and Delilah' that follows...

It is only fitting that we go back to the famous 'acoustic' shows of 1980 for this week's Deadpod. This was a request from one of my wonderful listeners for a show that not only features the famous acoustic first set, but outstanding electric sets 2 and 3. The first set is a treat for everyone who enjoys the acoustic Dead, and while I do like to feature this genre around the holidays, the arrival of Fall is reason enough to revisit this wonderful music. Since the acoustic set was not quite as long as I prefer for a Deadpod, I've also included the first part of the electric set 2, including a fine Mississippi Half-Step ->Franklin's Tower..

Dead Show/podcast for 10/2/15

This week's Deadpod takes us back to the second set of the Grateful Dead's performance at Madison Square Garden on Thursday September 20th, 1990. Not only is the crowd fired up by a great first set, but it quickly apparent that the boys are not about to phone in this set, as it turns into one of the strongest performances of the 90s. They come out of the gate with a strong rockin' Truckin'.. then move into a wonderful China Cat->I Know You Rider.. while Garcia's voice my be a bit scruffy, his leads are bright and glistening.. and when he leads the boys into Rider and wants to be that headlight he practically brings down the house. I may wish that Vince was a little lower, and Bruce a little higher in the mix.. but that doesn't for me detract from the joy of this one.. a bouncy and fun Man Smart, Woman Smarter leads us into.. a nice extended Drums->Space.. a perfectly played sequeway into one of the best, and longest, Dark Stars of the modern Dead era. This is a real treat, and clearly the highlight of the set, if not the run. I love Jerry's interplay with Hornsby here.. It takes us six minutes before that Star crashes... and Jerry's voice  has the perfect dream like quality here.. we all want to go to that transitive nightfall .. we follow as Jerry takes us to a Playin' reprise.. but lucky for us they do not escape the pull of that Dark Star.. and we are led back.. and after the second verse to weird and special places.. entirely fitting for a dark fall evening.... the band then finishes the set with a fine Throwin' Stones and a fun Touch of Grey.. after all that they could have been excused if they did a throw away encore but on this night that wasn't to be.. they end with a rockin' Lovelight.. what a great evening it must have been to be there!

Dead Show/podcast for 9/25/15

Generally considered the strongest show of one of the strongest runs in the band's Post-Brent Mydland career, this week's Deadpod pays homage to the band's performance on September 20th, 1990 at Madison Square Garden in New  York City, NY. I clearly remember how excited and happy I was when I first heard of, then finally got to listen to, this run of shows. There was much uncertainty about how the band would hold up after the passing of Mydland, but this run of shows showed that they were truly 'built to last'. The addition of Bruce Hornsby to the lineup provided a welcome surge of energy to Garcia, who, despite a voice that was sometimes a bit raspy, turned in an epic performance. This first set which we'll hear this week, shows a confident and rocking lineup. I'm especially fond of 'Ramble On Rose' and the 'Greatest Story Ever Told' 'US Blues' ending. Next week's second set features some GREAT jamming. I hope you enjoy it!

Dead Show/podcast for 9/18/15

This week we return to the Berkley Community Theater for the second set of the band's performance back on August 14th, 1971. The tape cuts into Truckin' in progress,  luckily however the excellent jam that ends the song is preserved.. from there we go into an early set Drums, and then, suddenly if not unexpectedly, the bombs drop signalling a truly great Other One to follow. Phil really shines on this one, and it leads to a truly psychedelic jam following the first verses. There are some great themes here... see what you can identify! The band flows back into the Other One which really was a signature jam in these days. Following a lengthy tune up Bobby goes into a nice version of 'Me & Bobby McGee'.. The Sugar Magnolia that follows really pops.. they really get cooking here, eventually the move  into a smoldering 'Not Fade Away'-> 'Goin' Down The Road'->'Not Fade Away'.. The boys eventually return for an excellent double encore of  'Johnny B Goode' and 'Uncle John's Band'.... I think this one surely stands out as one of the best shows of a most excellent year.

 I've received two copies of the CD 'The Best of the Grateful Dead'.. here's some info from the Dead.net website about this CD:

THE BEST OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD’s 32 tracks feature music from every Grateful Dead studio album and cover the key waypoints on the band’s mystical musical journey. Arranged chronologically, the tracks reflect the evolution of the group’s sound – and its membership – across more than two decades – from 1967’s “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” to 1989’s “Standing on the Moon.” In between, listeners will find the essential tracks that made the band such a cultural phenomenon, including such fan favorites as “St. Stephen,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia,” “Friend of the Devil,” “Scarlet Begonias,” and “Hell In a Bucket.”


In addition .. I have ONE copy of the newly released 4 CD set culled from the *80* disk 30 Trips arond the Sun:
this set features one cut from each of the 30 years of the band's touring history..

Dead Show/podcast for 9/11/15

A request from one of my supporters, as well as the fact that this past week marked Pigpen's 70th birthday inspired this week's Deadpod selection from the Berkeley Community Theater on August 14th, 1971. This is a great tape that showcases the early versions of many classics like 'Sugaree' and 'Playin' In the Band' as well as some outstanding Pigpen performances. Highlights include the opening 'Bertha', 'El Paso' played nice and slowly, 'Big Railroad Blues' (a personal favorite), and of course Pigpen on 'Big Boss Man' and 'Hard To Handle'. I'm always a fan of this period of the Dead's history and of course it helps that there are such great sounding tapes that we are lucky enough to be able to enjoy.

Dead Show/podcast for 9/4/15

This week's Deadpod continues with the second set from the band's performance on September 6th, 1980 at Lewiston Maine. Wildly praised by those in attendance, I think you'll enjoy this recording even though it has its share of flaws, and several of the songs are only from an audience recording. The set starts with one of those funky 80's Shakedown Streets.. always a great way to get the crowd on their feet and moving! A fairly standard Sailor->Saint leads into a nice Althea, but the magic starts to happen after that with a great Playin->Uncle John's->Space->Drums->Space..this recording, being a matrix, really captures the energy of the crowd when that Uncle John's starts up.. they follow with an excellent drums, then following space a really excellent NFA into the Wheel. I love how they come out of this and back into Uncle John's then into a Playin' reprise.. short but nicely done! 

A strong Sugar Magnolia closes the set, and the band returns for a double encore, featuring, of course, One More Saturday Night and a sweet Brokedown Palace..

Dead Show/podcast for 8/28/15

This week we feature yes another show from 1980.. this one was the last show of the summer tour that year, and took place up in Lewiston Maine, at a big outdoor festival there at the State Fairgrounds on September 6th, 1980. This is a wonderful show, and while this recording does suffer some issues (this is a soundboard/audience matrix) it still captures what is a superb performance and I'm certain you'll enjoy it. 

The boys come out strong out of the gate, with a rocking 'Alabama Getaway' into 'Greatest Story Every Told'.. when Garcia starts out with 'Sugaree' you might think things are about to settle down, but hold on for one of the better versions of this number you are likely to hear.. this is fantastic! The band is not about to slow down however as the remainder of set one contains plenty to like, including a rare, mid-set 'Feel Like A Stranger' and a great China->Rider->Promised Land to close out set 1. 

While we will hear set 2 next week, with its own spectacular jamming, I hope you find this set a great way to spend a late summer day...

Dead Show/podcast for 8/21/15

Here is the second set of the Grateful Dead's performance at the Glen Falls Civic Center in Glen Falls New York on May 8th, 1980. This set displays the same energy as the excellent first set, starting off with an unusual 'Uncle John's Band' opener. Estimated->Eyes follows, certainly not an unusual combination, but nevertheless Garcia makes the transition worth listening to. The Truckin' into Stella Blue is also very sweet and sad.. lovely. The set ends with some of their favorite rockin' numbers, an unusual Johnny B Goode set closer (instead of an encore).
