Dead Show/podcast for 9/4/15

This week's Deadpod continues with the second set from the band's performance on September 6th, 1980 at Lewiston Maine. Wildly praised by those in attendance, I think you'll enjoy this recording even though it has its share of flaws, and several of the songs are only from an audience recording. The set starts with one of those funky 80's Shakedown Streets.. always a great way to get the crowd on their feet and moving! A fairly standard Sailor->Saint leads into a nice Althea, but the magic starts to happen after that with a great Playin->Uncle John's->Space->Drums->Space..this recording, being a matrix, really captures the energy of the crowd when that Uncle John's starts up.. they follow with an excellent drums, then following space a really excellent NFA into the Wheel. I love how they come out of this and back into Uncle John's then into a Playin' reprise.. short but nicely done! 

A strong Sugar Magnolia closes the set, and the band returns for a double encore, featuring, of course, One More Saturday Night and a sweet Brokedown Palace..

Dead Show/podcast for 8/28/15

This week we feature yes another show from 1980.. this one was the last show of the summer tour that year, and took place up in Lewiston Maine, at a big outdoor festival there at the State Fairgrounds on September 6th, 1980. This is a wonderful show, and while this recording does suffer some issues (this is a soundboard/audience matrix) it still captures what is a superb performance and I'm certain you'll enjoy it. 

The boys come out strong out of the gate, with a rocking 'Alabama Getaway' into 'Greatest Story Every Told'.. when Garcia starts out with 'Sugaree' you might think things are about to settle down, but hold on for one of the better versions of this number you are likely to hear.. this is fantastic! The band is not about to slow down however as the remainder of set one contains plenty to like, including a rare, mid-set 'Feel Like A Stranger' and a great China->Rider->Promised Land to close out set 1. 

While we will hear set 2 next week, with its own spectacular jamming, I hope you find this set a great way to spend a late summer day...

Here is the second set of the Grateful Dead's performance at the Glen Falls Civic Center in Glen Falls New York on May 8th, 1980. This set displays the same energy as the excellent first set, starting off with an unusual 'Uncle John's Band' opener. Estimated->Eyes follows, certainly not an unusual combination, but nevertheless Garcia makes the transition worth listening to. The Truckin' into Stella Blue is also very sweet and sad.. lovely. The set ends with some of their favorite rockin' numbers, an unusual Johnny B Goode set closer (instead of an encore).

This week's Deadpod is the result of a request from one of my long time listeners' who reported that his wife had one of those annoying incidents where some lout dumped a beer on her during this, her very first Grateful Dead show and nevertheless remained tolerant enough to accompany him to yet another Dead show 15 years later where the same thing happened to the poor lady!
Despite all that this is a great show, and I'm happy to bring it to you this week, this comes from Falls Church NY from May 8th, 1980. It opens with a rockin' Alabama Getaway, and shows that the boys are ready to rock on this night! Other highlights for me include a fine 'High Time' and a great version of 'Lazy Lightnin'->Supplication'..

Dead Show/podcast for 8/7/15this

This week we present the third and final portion of the Grateful Dead's performance from the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Racecourse in Watkins Glen NY on July 28th, 1973. This may not be the best show of the year, but there is certainly some fine music here to recommend itself and to fuel many a thought as you listen. This section begins with a nice Stella Blue, and when you think well there is the Jerry Ballad, they go into a stunning 'Eyes of the World'. For my money the highlight of this set, this one features some amazing jams, especially after the chorus, with hints of 'Stronger than Dirt' and even 'Help on the Way'.. I hope you dig this as much as I did. Weir brings us down to earth with a shiny happy 'Sugar Magnolia' to follow, and then they give us a wonderful 'Sing Me Back Home' (patched however from the audience source and with a nasty cut at the end).. Not Fade Away' probably comes from the same audience patch, but features some high energy Keith on piano. The Mountain Jam featuring members of the Allman Brothers and the Band sounds better from a soundboard copy, and while it is a bit sloppy at times it is still a joy to hear again. While clearly not the most structured jam ever, this is still a fine way to celebrate the Days Between by  listening to Jerry on this one. When the jam finally ends, you'd think the band would be finished.. but we get a Johnny B Goode encore (with a cut and somewhat muddled vocals).. despite its flaws, I hope you enjoy this week's Deadpod..

On this Blue Moon Friday, we present the 2nd installment of the Grateful Dead's performance at Watkins Glen Speedway on July 28th, 1973. We start with the last song of the 1st set, but arguably the highlight of the show, a classic 'Playin' In the Band'. This one is in my opinion, on a par with the famous soundcheck of the previous day. It doesn't take them long to jump off on a psychedelic musical exploration here. Garcia's leads us on a fantastic voyage here, with a sound that at times I've heard described as a 'swarm of hornets', he leads us way out there. While this jam perhaps doesn't last as long as the day before, I would argue its clearly top shelf jazz improvisation. The second set starts with an 'Around and Around' patched from an audience copy, but we're back to the soundboard for a unique, funky, Loose Lucy. He's Gone develops nicely but transitions rather abruptly into Truckin'. This one suffers some audio problems but nothing to detract from the nice jam that follows the chorus.. where Jerry winds into a "Nobody's Fault' line .. the last minute or so they get a bit lost before going into .... 'El Paso'! .. like coming out of a dark room into the sunshine.. :) Our trip back to the summer of '73 closes this week with a China->Rider.. ahhh that sweet waterfall coming from Jerry's Guitar.. then that engine rolling down the track :) . see you in August!

This week I'm going to start to present the Grateful Dead's performance at the famous Watkins Glen racecourse from July 28th, 1973. Not only was this the largest rock concert attendance wise ever up to this point, it of course is most famous perhaps for the soundcheck the band did the day before the actual performance which I'm going to showcase these next 3 weeks. I think that is somewhat unfair, as this is a great show, as most are from 1973, and I think it is a fine show to use to celebrate Jerry's Birthday coming up as it does on August 1st.
This first part which I'm bringing you this week starts out with\ a hard charging 'Bertha' - Phil is leading the pack here, followed by a great 'Beat It On Down The Line', with some very nice keyboard work by Keith. Brown-Eyed Women follows, then a very fast tempo'd Mexicali Blues. Box Of Rain is very nicely done, and "Here Comes Sunshine' showcases Jerry doing some very nice explorations. Row Jimmy and Jack Straw follow, and then an explosive Deal is where we will leave off this week's Deadpod, with more to follow in the next two weeks.

Dead Show/podcast for 7/17/15

On this week's Deadpod the band shows plenty of excitement and enthusiasm throughout a pretty great second set during their first visit to Red Rocks back in 1978. I've always been a fan of Cold Rain and Snow, and this is a great way to open the set. Garcia starts several of these songs rather slowly but they tend to  build up to a great climax, and I think that is apparent especially on the Scarlet->Fire. The Dancin' in the Streets is one of the best versions ever, you'll want to move when you hear it! Not Fade Away is quite unique as well, as Jerry goes into a tease of Nobody's Fault but Mine before returning to the Not Fade Away lines.. The double encore of US Blues and Johnny B Goode is a sure sign they had a great night out in the Rockies this day!

Dead Show/podcast for 7/10/15

As I pondered what show to bring you this week, in the shadow of the emotion and excitement of last weekend's Fare Thee Well shows, I settled upon this show which marked the band's first visit to one of their very favorite venues, Red Rocks. This took place back on July 7th, 1978, and while I've previously played the next night's show, which is perhaps a bit more famous and of which probably better tapes circulate, I think you'll be entertained by this effort as well, which certainly displayed all of the excitement and energy present on both nights. This first set is exceptionally well played, starting out with a rousing 'Jack Straw' and containing a number of well-played favorites, including 'Candyman', ' Friend of the Devil' and 'Tennessee Jed'. The set closing 'Music Never Stopped' is of particular interest, as it has a wonderful bit of Garcia jamming both at the beginning and the end.. really superb.

The source for this show is a audience/soundboard matrix, as the only circulating soundboard tape is a split mono source with some annoying omissions. I hope you enjoy it.

This week i thought it appropriate to feature a set from Chicago so we will finish up with set 2 from the Auditorium Theater in Chicago Il that was played back on June 29th, 1976. Not only is this a very fine sounding recording but I am willing to bet you'll enjoy how the band sounds .. there is quite a bit of very fine jamming going on here. Jerry sounds great on the Candyman, and the Playin' in the Band has some very interesting music in it to say the least! Of course, it is a treat to hear a 'later' St. Stephen and this one is very interesting going into Not Fade Away then back to Stephen. 

The US Blues is rough, but hey its the 4th! :)

Dead Show/podcast for 6/26/15

With much excitement building for this week and next week's Fare Thee Well shows, I decided to feature a show from the windy city on this week (and next week's) Deadpod.. this one comes from the Auditorium Theater back on June 29th, 1976. The first thing you'll notice, as with any shows from this period, is the slower tempo. Some people love the more deliberate pacing, some hate it, but I enjoy hearing these shows from time to time and think its easy to appreciate how the band is reinventing themselves after their long layoff in '75. The 'Tennessee Jed' that serves as the opener here is certainly out of place to our ears, but I enjoy the way Jerry phrases his notes here.
Cassidy follows, then, another much slower tempo Peggy-O.. Mama Tried follows then, a treat, the very last time the Grateful Dead played 'Mission in the Rain'.. while this was to be a standard in the Garcia Band, I'm pleased to be able to hear it  here. Other highlights in this first set include a sparkling Brown-Eyed Women and to me, the languid, almost dream-like 'Row Jimmy'..

This week, set 2 of a wonderful recording of a rockin' show from the Summer of 1980 - 6/20/80 from Anchorage Alaska. This is really a wonderful classic set of Grateful Dead music for the period, and this second set starts out with a fabulous Alabama Getaway into Greatest Story Every Told. The crowd knows they're in for a treat here as the boys rock this one out! Ship of Fools follows and then a wonderful version of Estimated Prophet - the band really lights this one up. This flows not surprisingly into 'The Other One' but the drums and space that follows is quite interesting and lead into a really funky Brent intro into a sweet 'Not Fade Away' - no throwaway set closer here. Black Peter follows , then the boys step on the pedal again to end the set with a great 'Around and Around' into 'Johnny B. Goode'. They return with a 'Don't Ease' me encore to say goodnight to their Alaskan guests..

Dead Show/podcast for 6/12/15

As I sat outside on my porch last night at 9:30 PM, noticing that it was still light, I thought that it might be time to bring you a show from the land of the midnight sun, Alaska. This week I'm playing a great show from the Dead's only visit to our largest state, back in 1980. This is from the middle of a three night run in a high school auditorium, on June 20th, 1980. I think you'll agree this is a particularly fine first set, starting out with a nice Jack Straw going into a great and bouncing, Franklin's Tower. The Mana Tried->Mexicali duo is well played and full of spunk as well. Weir infused the Let it Grow with just  the right imagery and the Althea that follows is a treat to hear. The boys don't stop there, however, as they might on a lesser day, but go on to add four more ditties to this first set including a fine Deal to close it. I think you'll enjoy this first set if you aren't already a fan, and if you are, hopefully you'll enjoy revisiting this fine show from 35 years ago.

Dead Show/podcast for 6/5/15

Here is a second set from a show recently requested from one of my listeners, I happen to think this is one of the better shows of this year, June 19th, 1994 from Autzen Stadium in Eugene Oregon. While I didn't think the first set warranted publishing it, I did think this second set would bring a smile to many peoples' faces as they recalled some of the shows they saw in the 90s. This Sunday afternoon set starts off with a nice Scarlet ->Fire, the transition jam and the jam in Fire in particular is unique and interesting and I think you'll enjoy even Vince's contributions here and in this set. They follow with Samson and Delilah (it was a Sunday after all), then into Way To Go Home, and this one is surprisingly good, in my opinion, although it was never anyone's favorite. Then comes the heart of this set, a very good Playin' In the Band into Uncle John's Band. Billy and Mickey do a great Drumz and Space. The Other One that follows is decent if predictable, but I always enjoyed the 90's Wharf Rats and this is a quite good one. Bobby ends the set with a good reading of Good Lovin' .. then the boys come out and do a sweet 'Knockin' as the encore.
This is a decently sized second set, especially for the era, and I hope you'll enjoy it as I thought I should mix it up a little this week on the Deadpod.

Sad News

I was informed that the Deadpod received a DMCA violation notification this week from the lawyers representing the Jerry Garcia estate. Consequently I have had to remove any Deadpods that contained Jerry Garcia Band material and those will no longer be available. I will no longer be able to feature any such material either.
I am hopeful that will be the end of the matter.

Dead Show podcast for 5/29/15

This week the Deadpod takes you way back to the spring of 1970 when the Dead made their very first trip across the ocean to England.. this show took place on May 24th, 1970 I decided to publish the entire show as it was not broken into sets, and while the sound leaves alot to be desired it is quite listenable for the most part, and as a historical document of the day I am hoping that you'll get into it as I did. The band once described the crowd at this show as the coldest they ever encountered, and its clear that they work very hard at getting them juiced up as their energy in this set is pretty full tilt. The Casey Jones starts out with very degraded sound but it gets better as Bear dials it in.. the China->Rider is quite good and contains a unique transitional jam. Hard To Handle is classic Pigpen, and you'll hear that he is in fine form throughout this set. The Cryptical->Other One->Cryptical->Attics is a treat, as it is a very early version of Attics.. The Dark Star is excellent, and displays the qualities of the early primal Dark Stars. The Lovelight is over the top, and while sadly again suffering from some sonic degradation, it is still great to hear Pigpen in such fine form.

As we turn the corner this weekend into the unofficial start of summer, we have a smokin' hot set of Dead music to serve as the soundtrack. This is set 3 of the band's performance on May 26th, 1973 at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. The boys open with a straight ahead rockin' version of 'Mississippi Half Step'.. some beautiful Garcia licks there in the closing.. then 'Me & My Uncle', then we get into the heart of the matter.. a nice, stretched out 'He's Gone'.. including some great Phil bass and baritone vocals.. then we go into a wonderful stretch of music, one of the best of a very good year as the band dissolves He's Gone into Truckin'.. then we go into a great Other One intro and jam, then a beautiful Eyes of the World->China Doll.. what a day! Keith is on the money here and Billy is as always, outstanding.
As I sit back and enjoy this I marvel at the band's energy here after already having played two smoking' sets. Is it one of the best of that very good year? prehaps.. but it is not worth the argument, it is a pleasure to behold..

Dead Show/podcast for 5/15/15

This week's Deadpod featu res a great set of music, from the second of three sets that took place back on May 26th, 1973 at the old Kezar Stadium in San Francisco CA. As I understand it this was an  unusually warm and sunny day in San Francisco and the band's performance matched the weather. The Here Comes Sunshine that opens this second set is in my opinion, one of the better ones the band every played. El Paso follows, then a Loser that is notable for the wonderful interplay between Jerry and Bob.. Beat It on Down the Line is always a crowd pleaser, then Donna Jean sings 'You Ain't Woman Enough....'.. I always get a kick out of that.. Phil follows with a nice Box of Rain, then the highlight of this set, the China->Rider. Not to denigrate either song, but catch the really kewl transition between these two.. its unique and not the ordinary way the band blends these two together..
You'd think that would be enough, but not on this day.. the boys follow with Big River, and excellent Bertha and an Around and Around to keep the crowd dancin'.. then they'll be back for set THREE next week here on the Deadpod..

Dead Show/podcast for 5/8/15

This week's Deadpod comes as a result of a request from a longtime supporter of the 'pod.. an excellent choice from 1973.. this is quite a famous show and there have been great tapes around but I'm quite certain you'll enjoy it, and don't believe I've ever featured it on the Deadpod .. This is from Kezar Stadium in San Francisco CA back on May 26th, 1973. The gig featured both Waylon Jennings and the New Riders of the Purple Sage as opening acts and from all reports they both put on fine sets so the crowd was well warmed up by the time the Dead took the stage around 2 in the afternoon. We will hear the first set this week which consists for the most part, of well played classic first set Dead tunes. While most of the surprises and jamming will come in what follows, I think you'll enjoy this fine recording.. I know I find myself dreaming of sitting out in the sunshine when I heard the opening notes of 'Jack Straw'.. I hope you'll forgive me for consecutive weeks that include 'The Race Is On' but it's always fun to hear... They Love Each Other is one of the bounciest versions ever! It's hard not to imagine Garcia smiling on this one.. The Playin' in the Band that closes the set is tight and jazzy and gives a hint as to the what is to come..

Here we are in the beautiful month of May - Kentucky Derby weekend no less - so I wanted to bring you a set that of course included the band's wonderful rendition of George Jones'  'The Race Is On'.. In addition, this pick comes from the fabulous Frost Amphitheater back in the fine year of 1989..  This week's show from May 6th, 1989, happened to be a Rex benefit as well, and I think it is a fine example of the band's work during this period which was always easy to listen to and enjoy.
While the setlist is perhaps not extraordinary, aside from the Race Is On's inclusion, the songs are all quite up tempo (with the exception of Walkin' Blues and a perhaps not the best-played version of West LA.. ) and I'm sure the crowd was enjoying itself in the California sunshine. I hope you enjoy this one as well..........

Ask and you shall receive.. at least sometimes.. :) this week's Deadpod was the result of a request just posted on the Facebook page for 8/23/68.. this is a great performance and a pretty damm good tape.. it took place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles CA the night before 'Two From The Vault' was recorded.. this features the Dead during one of their most creative periods. I just love the energy on this tape.. the opening Other One on this tape just crackles with it.. The Dark Star is full of Pigpen's funky organ in that characteristic early opening.. The Eleven is one of my favorite versions ever.. and there's really no words to describe the Alligator->Caution.. this is the highlight of an incredible show.. dig it.

Spring is finally arriving around here and my thoughts turned to the great Spring tour of Europe 72. Since that tour is completely released on the box set I am going to share with you this week a wonderful set from the fall of 1972. This show took place on October 27th, 1972 in Columbus Ohio. I don't have, nor do I believe there exists, a copy of the first set that matches the quality of the audience recording of set 2 that I've chosen for this week's Deadpod. This is said to be Bear's recording and I would not doubt that from the quality - I do think you'll enjoy it. Beyond that the performance is first rate. Especially from Truckin' through The Other One, to a Mississipi Half-Step(!) the band is on fire. I'm a huge fan fo the Uncle John's encore as well.. a great set from a great year.. I hope you enjoy this one!

Dead Show/podcast for 4/10/15

This week we will listen to the second set from the Dead's performance that took place on April 15th, 1983 in Rochester NY. This is a very long, sometimes meandering set, that clocks in at over one hour and 47 minutes. Despite its length, it seems a bit void of Garcia vocals. The set starts out well enough with a Feel Like A Stranger and Samson and Delilah to get the crowd moving. Brent follows with 'Maybe You Know' a tune I always enjoyed until he stopped performing it in '86. After that we get a very soulful 'He's Gone' which leads into one of only three performances of a little ditty that has been called 'Bob Star' or 'Little Star' .. this leads into a long and quite space drums and space. Five songs follow post space, all pretty well played and ending with a 'Johnny B Goode'. Jerry comes out for the encore with a 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' which was done quite often in that slot during this period.

Dead Show/podcast for 4/3/15

This week's Deadpod has been on my request list for quite awhile, and in reviewing that list I decided it was time to pull it out. This show comes to us from April 15th, 1983 at the War Memorial Auditorium in Rochester NY. There seems to be lots of good memories of this show, and while I don't think it was their strongest outing of the year, it is an enjoyable and generally wellplayed performance I think you'll enjoy. A Shakedown opener is always a great way to start out a show and we're treated to a good one here. Brent's keyboards add a nice, uptempo feeling here and Jerry does a great job with his leads and vocals - listen for how he changes the words at one point. 'My Brother Esau' follows in the second slot - a strange position for this number, I think, and frankly I think it takes the band a bit to work into the emotional feel of this number, following Shakedown. I enjoy this number, but to my ears there's a bit of dissonance here. A nice Brown-Eyed Women follows, but it is marred by microphone problems which steal from us Jerry's first couple verses. Little Red Rooster has the additional Brent verses that often popped up during this period. Dire Wolf follows, a personal favorite, then Lazy Lightnin'->Supplication, followed by a nice set ending Deal.

Dead Show/podcast for 3/27/15

While I wouldn't say this second set was overshadowed by the first, it is one of the rare second sets that is shorter than its first set..the band however does not let up on the jamming as this second set is a true pleasure to relive. They come out of the box hot and fast with an excellent Eyes of the World, played in the uptempo fashion.. despite the furious pace there are plenty of beautiful Garcia licks sure to get you moving.  Eyes then moves into an unusual but interesting short space that leads into the fabulously funky 'Dancin' In the Streets'.. again here, Garcia and Lesh in particulary provide plenty of interesting leads and take their time exploring the beat. They transition nicely into the unmistakable entrance to 'Wharf Rat'. In contrast to the frenzied pace of Eyes, this Wharf Rat is quite languid, building the drama in the music along with the tragic story - always one of my favorites.. . the transition into Franklin's Tower is a bit abrupt but the standalong Franklin's is a rare treat.

Garcia here is really playing his guitar like ringing a bell.. :) As with every song in this set they take their time and develop the melody - in this case almost 14 minutes of delightful playing. 

The close with a rockin', delightful, Sugar Magnolia... Then they return with, surprise (since it is Saturday - 'One More Saturday Night', but indicating I think how much fun they had, a double encore of a nice 'Uncle John's Band'.. man I can only imagine how happy the fans went home after this one!

This week's Deadpod features a quite wonderful show from 1977. This show took place back on March 19th 1977 at Winterland in San Francisco. Perhaps overlooked a bit because of the band's iconic performances in May of that year, this show features a huge first set (both in terms of length as well as power of performance). The band plays a number of great classic first set songs, and plays them all very well, before breaking into a  the second part of this set which is almost a second set itself - Estimated, Terrapin and then a 30 minute trifecta of Playin->Samson->Playin that features some truly spectacular exploration from Garcia. 

Do yourself a favor and spend some time with this set..

This week's Deadpod features the second set from the Band's performance on March 18th, 1971 at the Fox Theater in St. Louis Missouri. This is clearly a great performance from a great year. Starting with the Other One the band really delivers a great performance. Jerry does a great version of Wharf Rat here and the band displays how it can turn on a dime with Billy as the solo drummer in the transitions, especially from Greatest Story into Johnny B. Goode.  The highlight of this set might have to be Pigpen on the Caution - this is a great version..

Spring is supposed to be springing .. soon... so I plan to hurry it along with this beauty from 1971 which should generate a little heat... This comes to you from the City of Blues, St. Louis back on March 18th, 1971 (there has been some dustups over that date... some say the 17th.. I have no dog in this fight).. As with most artifacts from that year this one should please all but the Touchiest of Heads.. :)

Dead Show/podcast for 2/27/15

This week's Deadpod comes from exactly 25 years ago, the Mardi Gras show that occurred on February 27th, 1990 at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. We'll hear the second set this week, which starts off with a long drums that allowed the Mardi Gras parade to wind its way all around the arena. The band goes into an appropriately themed Iko, Iko and Man Smart, Woman Smarter before settling into their more standard second set. A nicely done Standing on the Moon leads into Truckin' and Spoonful pre-drums. Afterwards a strong Other One, leads into a very well done Morning Dew. The boys wrap up the set with a Not Fade Away into Throwing Stones but return for a short, but sweet, We Bid You Goodnight.

Yes this week (and next) I decided we should celebrate Mardi Gras with a wonderful Mardi Gras show from back in the spring of 1990. This show from the Oakland Arean,has a very laid back vibe that builds and becomes more and more psychedelic and interesting as the show went on. I really liked the jam in Sugaree and the Bird Song that ends this first set is excellent.

Yowza! When a tape such as the one we're going to hear this week sees the light of day I simply can't contain my enthusiasm.This tape comes from June 5th, 1970 - Fillmore West San Francisco California.. that's right 1970.. one of the greatest watershed years in the band's history and one that has always been sadly underrepresented in terms of recordings.. Furthurmore the provenance of this tape traces back to Bear who recorded it on a Sony 770 reel to reel deck. We have both an acoustic and electric set.. and I can't possible not play the entire set for you this week.
Naturally there are various tape dropouts and cuts, reel flips, etc... a small price to pay for this fabulous treasure, in my opinion. This is a real beauty my friends.. I hope you savor it as much as I have!

Dead Show/podcast for 2/6/15

This week's Deadpod features a darn good second set from November 2nd, 1977 when the boys played at Seneca College in Toronto Canada. This set features a kind of slow build up to a real apex of jamming and finishes off strong as well. This second set has a somewhat unusual order.. it starts with a nice Sampson and Delilah goes into a rather slower Ship of Fools. Then we get an uptempo Good Lovin' followed by Donna's 'Sunrise'.. then we get one of the highlights of the show, a killer Scarlet->Fire.. that goes into Estimate Prophet. As Estimated closes we hear Jerry bring out 'St. Stephen' much to the delight of the crowd. the Truckin' that follows is wonderfully done.  They follow the rockin' Around and Around with a rare Terrapin Station encore which is quite well done.
A really nice way to pass some time in the dead of Winter...

Brrrrrrrrrrrrr... given that many of us are in the icy grips of old man Winter, I thought it appropriate to fulfill a request for a show from north of the Border.. yes the Great White North, Canada.. This is I believe one of the better shows from that great country, from November 2nd, 1977 at Seneca College in Toronto Canada. In this week's first set you'll immediately tell the band hasn't lost the magic that made this one of the great years in Grateful Dead history, as the band is tight and sounding great throughout. There is a really hot 'Big River' and 'Looks Like Rain'.. but the real highlight i sone of the better 'Lazy Lightnin'>Supplication' jams where Jerry just shreds.. I know you're going to enjoy it.

I figured it was time for a January thaw with some sweet Jerry Garcia Band music, and I was recently turned on to a pretty good show that hasn't been heard too much I don't think. This is an audience recording that comes to us from September 20th, 1976 from the Astor Theater in Reading PA. While some songs are a bit over saturated I really enjoyed listening to this performance and hope you do as well. These tunes are really nicely explored, and I really enjoy the sound that comes from having both Keith and Donna Godchaux in the band at this time. This week i'm playing the early show from this date, let me know if you would enjoy hearing the late show next week, after you hear how this one sounds. The show itself contains many favorites for the period, and Jerry's voice is great on these.. hope you enjoy it!
