Dead Show/podcast for 12/18/09

This week's Deadpod has two unusual occurances - first a show from 1986 - a year I usually find quite depressing and an audience tape to boot! I think when you give this show a listen you'll understand why I decided to ignore my prejudices and post this classic show! This one starts with a smokin' Alabama Getaway into Greatest Story.. there's a *fine* Dire Wolf and I was always a fan of Brother Esau.. the rest of the set is very well played as well, and closes with the second Box of Rain in a week after having not been played since '73.. the crowd goes predictably wild.. :)

I hope you enjoy the performance..

Dead Show/podcast for 12/11/09

This week's Deadpod starts with one of my all-time favorite Shakedown Streets - this one really blows the doors off the place then seques into a fine Samson & Delilah..After a sweet Ship of Fools we're treated to a great ride on the Terrapin Express!! This set seems a real precursor of the fine shows to follow in 1980 and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.. the double encore, Alabama Getaway into Promised Land, shows me the band had a great time this night as well!

Dead Show/podcast for 12/4/09

This week's Deadpod features a show that I've always enjoyed, although the recordings that were previously available of it were all flawed in various ways (off pitch, and Jerry was always low in the mix).. this new release from Charlie Miller fixes many of these problems and I think you'll really enjoy the energy the band shows throughout the show....

Dead Show/podcast for 11/20/09

This week I'm doing something I don't usually do - and that is rather than play this complete show over two weeks I decided to play you the real heart of this show this week - (not saying I can't be persuaded to play the rest of this... :) partly because its Thanksgiving and I have something in mind for next week :)
Be that as it may - this piece of music, from the second set of 11/17/73 is simply astounding. It represents a true pinacle of the outstanding musicianship that the band achieved during this landmark year. I challange any fan of the band to not be moved by this remarkable piece of music - clearly when they play like this I am firmly convinced that their music is for the ages...

Dead Show/podcast for 11/13/09

This week's Dead show is more than just a classic 1977 show - its that for sure - and its much more than the first time we get an Eyes of the World going into an Estimated Prophet - although this show is the first time that happens too.. its the kind of magical, rocking, charging life affirming and soul-baring music that makes me fall in love with the Grateful Dead over and over again..

There's plenty to love in this set - the fine Samson->Cold rain starts the set perfectly.. the Playin' in the band builds and builds and then explodes into the Eyes of the World that is played at a real breakneck pace. While I'm not often a fan of Eyes played this way, Jerry's almost maniacal energy on this version can't fail but bring you up out of your feet - its almost 'hummingbird' like in the way he makes that guitar flitter and sing.. followed by a good Estimated, but then Phil drops the hammer and the band goes into a short, but intense, Other One...
after drums.. the band slowly builds into an Aiko, Aiko that is surprisingly slow-paced, but the band then drops into a classic 1977 Stella Blue, then a playin' reprise to end the set..
The encore tells us the band has had as much fun as we have...

Dead Show/podcast for 11/06/09

I must say that my listeners are simply the best ! I received an simply perfect request this week for the show we're going to start listening to this week as I was casting about in my mind trying to decide what to play... and what a show it is. This show not only shows the band in a period of transition from their slower tempo early '77 style of playing to the more uptempo arrangements of 1978 but its simply one of the best shows of the entire year. The first set which we'll listen to this week, not only blasts out of the gates with a fabulous Bertha->Good Lovin' , but keeps up a most memorable and high energy performance on every tune. Not to be missed, the set closing Let It Grow is truly outstanding, and really shows the unique ability of the band to fire off in all directions yet to find the 'one' and bring us all back into harmony and love.. whew.. a great set and the second set from next week is even better.....

Dead Show/podcast for 10/23/09

I'm surrounded by beautiful Fall foliage here in Michigan this time of year and it brought to mind this quite remarkable period of Dead shows. I will never forget when I saw the Dead open up sitting around and playing accoustic music. I loved those shows, and unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of soundboards of complete shows from that period that are out but this is one and I hope that you enjoy hearing it as much as I do.

Yes the acoustic sets may not have as much variety as we'd like - but I really doubt that you can avoid having a smile as you listen to the boys chat between tunes or sing along as you listen to Ripple.. its a real pleasure for me and I hope you enjoy it as well..

Dead Show/podcast for 10/16/09

This week we get to listen to one of the best second sets that the band produced in 1983.. Each of these songs individually is played with a verve that will bring a smile to your face, but the totality, as is often the case with the Dead, is much more than the beauty of the individual songs.
I could tell you how much I enjoy this particular china->rider, or the wonderful Space into the best St. Stephen of the last three the band played, but I'd rather you simply enjoy this set and the joy that I hope it brings you...

Dead Show/podcast for 10/2/09

this week's Deadpod features the 2nd set of this entertaining show from 9/24/91, Boston MA.
Its one of those second sets that I really enjoy the song choices.. China->Rider is always a keeper, and Man Smart, Woman Smarter always got everyone on their feet! The Ship of Fools->Dark Star is fine as well. A rare Foolish Heart out of space, and one of these later day 'Standing On the Moon's that is very mellow.. The Weight encore caps a set that really does move my soul.

Dead Show/podcast for 9/18/09

I had a request from one of my long time listeners for some primal Dead.. preferably from '67..
Well I have been wanting to break this out for a while and while its not quite '67 its only a month off.. Jan of '68 .. although there has been some discussion as to the legitimacy of the date and venue of this show.. what there is no question of is that this is a helluva piece of early Dead music.. I really enjoy the Born Cross-Eyed, well and the Spanish Jam and the Dark Star.. and and : ) Seriously this piece will take several listens to fully digest ..

Enjoy this sample of electric. live, Good Old Grateful Dead...

This week we have the entire second set of the Dead's wonderful performance at the Orlando Arena on April 7th, 1991. A splendid example of Garcia and Hornsby, this set opens with a splendid Crazy Fingers into an always enjoyable Playin'>Uncle John's>Playin' sandwich... I especially enjoy the jamming in the Playin' reprise, which goes into a very enjoyable drumz>space segment.

Dead show/podcast for 08/14/09

As I'm sure you know, this weekend marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock..
of course the Grateful Dead played there - in fact they were one of the headliners - yet they thought so little of their performance there that they never had anything good to say about it..

Whether the Dead's performance was any worse than any number of shows is an open question, yet the significance of the event for the culture Zeitgeist is beyond question.. We start this week's Deadpod with a discussion with author Pete Fornatale, whose new book Back to the Garden, The Story of Woodstock presents an oral history of this amazing event..

We then listen to two songs from the Dead's performance that night -
High Time and Lovelight, the latter where the band is joined by a very high Ken Babbs...
Hope you enjoy the show..

Dead show/podcast for 5/29/09

Wow, this week we're lucky enough to listen to a real find, courtesy of Jamie Waddell, who claims to have been turned on to this amongst a box of tapes turned on to him at a yard sale of all places...
this is a really nice JGB show from 1987, and while the first song (both this week and next) come from an audience patch, the rest is very high quality soundboard.
I know you're going to enjoy this one if you a fan of the big guy.. :)

Dead show/podcast for 5/15/09

I receive quite a few requests for shows to play on the Deadpod - and unfortunately can't publish all of them, but I've had a few requests recently for some "primal" Dead. Coinciding with this request was the release of a new version of the classic show we're going to start to listen to this week, without one of the brutal cuts that plagued all earlier versions, from master collector Charlie Miller, so it seemed to me that the fates were telling me to bring this show to you.. I'm certain you'll enjoy this - the band just *smokes* on this one, my friends..

Please note: I understand that I had a misplaced song in the original podcast - my appologies - if you downloaded the first version you may need to re-download the corrected one..

On a personal note, this marks the last Deadpod to come to you from my home for the last 28 years, Columbia Missouri. I am relocating to Lansing Michigan this week, and so there may be a week or two sabbatical as I try to get oriented to my new surroundings. This means saying good-bye to my good friends at KOPN, 89.5 FM. While I have some hopes of continuing our relationship, I want everyone there to know how much I love them and thank them for all their support over the years!
I do hope to continue broadcasting the Deadpod from Michigan, thanks to the kind support of my wonderful listeners.. thanks so much!

note that the last two songs in this set, New Speedway Boogie and Cumberland Blues, supposedly feature David Crosby on 12 string.. also note that the first song, Don't Ease Me In, is from an audience source with degraded sound.. sorry, but felt it was best to leave it in..

Dead Show/podcast for 1/2/09

Happy New Year everyone!
This week I'll bring you the second set from December 30th 1990 at Oakland CA.
A great set list, and if you like shows with Bruce Hornsby sitting in I think you'll find this to be a good one. A really nice example of one of the more high energy shows of a generally well played year.

Please Note: I've uploaded a corrected version of this set - I mistakenly omitted the Playin' In the Band - it should now be corrected - my appologies!

Grateful Dead Coliseum Arena Oakland, CA 12/30/90 - Sunday
Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo > Looks Like Rain ; Crazy Fingers > Playing In The Band > Drums > Space > Terrapin Station > Sugar Magnolia
Encore U.S. Blues
